Multiculturism Comes to Town!
Pictures by Karol Steele

Last saturday(June 21) saw the Multicultural Festival invade Market Square yet again. The Festival was declared open by local MP Gwyn Prosser...who you can see here launching balloons aplenty as the festivities got underway. The festival is in its 11th year and is organised by the Kent Refugee Society but the gossip is that it had shrunk somewhat this year. It seemed to peak a year or two ago when it ran in harmony with other events being held in Pencester Gardens, but nevertheless despite all that, the event still provided plenty of colour and certainly amused shoppers when groups marched up the town in their gaily coloured attire, as seen in the top picture.

The picture left shows local actress Karol Steele enjoying the frivolities. Karol was taking a lighthearted break from filming her latest television programme for Watch, and not only got to take these pictures but somehow managed to got into the shots too, is there no end to this talent! Karol is seen here with Matthew Callow from Kent Pagans. Ah...there are lots of these Pagans about lately !

Hello, Hello, Hello...what have we got 'ere then!?

When we said not one member of the public turned up to see the fantastic flag raising ceremony, we didnt get it strictly accurate. No we boobed! This guy here did, as seen in the pictures on the left. Yes he plonked himself down on the grass right near the War Memorial, and right in the thick of the action too, just as it was all about to take place. A guy of... ermm..how shall we put it..of outdoor appearance, who may or may not have the look of an imbiber , settled down oblivious to any breach. He was however, seemingly fully informed as to what was about to take place, more than can be said of the rest of the heaving metropolis.

In no time at all the long arm of the law reached out, from whence they came with such speed I know not, but the chap was moved in friendly fashion all of eight whole feet, where he watched the ceremony unfurl from the adjacent wooden bench.

The gathered throng of councillors, from all districts and all durisdictions, and sporting fine fine finery (oh how I regret not wearing a tie and not getting a haircut), carried on then in regal style with the glorious proceedings! PB

Another chance to see in close up, Dover's only ordinary citizen represented at the event.
