I popped into Morrisons yesterday with my 12 yr old grandaughter. When I got to the till the cashier (who was about my age) asked me if I was in a bad mood. When I said I wasn't and was feeling quite cheerful she smiled and said "AT LAST". Baffled I asked why and she said that her last four customers had been grumpy and moaning and she was losing the will to live!!
"Aww bless" I said, well me and my grandaughter are happy and we made her laugh by basically just being silly. But it got me thinking. Those cashiers are stuck there until they finish, they can't make an excuse and walk away like we could. So I say to you brothers and sisters - lets make it our duty to make a cashier smile every day, you know it makes sense

There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

Ah yes it must be a monotonous job...toiling away on the register day after day with nary a smiling face. Grim faced worried customers shuffling through with toilet rolls and baked beans, the queue appearing ever longer as each hour goes by. You sometimes forget they arent part of the machinery.
I had a conversation with one recently..
"do you want any plastic bags?" said she
"yes" said I...
I must try and do better.

I challenge anyone who thinks working in a supermarket is a doddle to work in one for a week. The rudeness of some customers is beyond belief and many treat the staff as if they robots. Some of them are unaware that the words "excuse me, please and thank you" exist. I find the staff in Morrison's very pleasant and far preferable to "that lot down the road".

And yet...
We may not dress in sequinned Basque
nor in high heels and skin-toned tights
a little common courtesy is all we ask
we are each human with human delights
To link arms all in a line is not our task
how we perform is not to kick our heights
in Brucey's star-light we might not bask
at hearth and home we spend our nights
And yet Tiller Girls we are, of sorts
and an esential job we do
we'd far prefer chat to gruff retorts
As if you were we, would you.
We are all in this together
as you shop so must we
"How are you this weather?"
"How pleasant can YOU be?"
Ignorance is bliss, bliss is happiness, I am happy...to draw your attention to the possible connectivity in the foregoing.

another nice response to someone when they ask how you are is to roar back "are you my doctor then"?

"If you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours."
Help me to be
Cheerful when things go wrong;
Persevering when things are
Difficult; and serene when things
Are irritating.
Enable me to be
Helpful to those in difficulties;
Kind to those in need;
Sympathetic to those whose hearts
Are sore and sad.

I started my working life as a cashier, and what a nightmare it was on occasion.
I loved it though as I could get some people to smile, but we were taught early on that smiling wasnt optional, and you also look at the customer, acknowledge them, scan their items, check they havent forgotten anything , ask for the loyalty card and take their pennies, ansd then say good bye!
I wish heartily that cashiers now adays did.. I hate being on the mobile phone but sometimes have no choice, but i always say hello, and sorry , and thank you at the end of the transactions.
My favourite trick is to say hello quite brightly when they are sullen and ignore me, and then always say thank you with a big grin. Half of them still dont take the hint!! One of my bug bears.. rude cashiers..
Dont even get me started on cashiers more interested in talking to their mates over the checkouts.... because i need to know who was out and wasted.... i always join in, normally stops that quite quickly.

Like Jenni I always say a happy 'Hello' to grumpy looking cashiers (or anyone like that in a public place.) It annoys them, but if they are simply having a bad day then maybe I'll have cheered them up a little. Also a little compliment always goes a long way. I do find most cashiers are very pleasant and we have a chat. I often find it's the other shoppers that are grumpy not the cashiers!
Having cashiers/shop employees continue chatting to their friends whilst I am trying to pay or ask a question only results in one outcome. If I am ignored for longer than a reasonable about of time (i.e. I felt they genuinely didn't see me or it was a matter of life or death) I simply walk out - often leaving the item on the cash desk.
Morrisons have made the effort with their customer service it has to be said (apart from a couple of habitual grumps.....!).
I am entirely behind Jeanne with the gossiping shop staff! I wouldn't dream of using my cellphone while talking to someone else and always try to be as courteous as possible , and expect the same attention and courtesy in return. I have done just the same, left a basket or item and walked away.

I was in Asda and Tesco yesterday and both cashiers were very friendly and polite. You can't beat a little common courtesy and a smile

It cheers everyone up no matter how we feeling on the day

Some of my early jobs were being a cashier i was always happy to the customers but didnt wash with some of them i even had a threat once to be met after work to be beaten up by an elderly gentleman as i wished him a good day his response was colourful to say the least lol

Yes I can always remember my Sister saying that working with the public could sometimes be difficult,you have to smile and be pleasant, but I always think that if you are pleasant you will get the same respsonse.
And I have always found the cashiers at our local Supermarkets very pleasant.
