10:5067606earlier this year the "bluebells" guest house opened in the folkestone road, yesterday i noticed another has opened opposite the station.
the trend in recent years has been to close them, therefore it must be a sign of increased confidence in dover.

13:3467611Bit of good news there Howard. I can remember when Folkestone Road consisted of small hotels and guest houses, with the owners taking a pride in the appearance of their properties. Let's hope more open in the future.

13:3767612This has been a good summer for the b&b industry. Last night we had our first empty room since early July. 2 reasons: Churchill Hotel closure has reduced supply and a weaker £ has increased the number of foreign visitors.

15:5367622doesn't look promising for next year then, the churchill will be reopening and the euro is steadily weakening against the pound, all economic indicators suggest that it will continue to do so.

06:5767707That's what it used to be callled years ago Keith - back in the 90s.
The people who owned the Elmo then, moved out to house asylum seekers there and then in a few short years had made enough money to buy the County Hotel. They have been doing well while the Churchill has been closed.
I met the Blue Bell owners a month or so and they had their own views on how to run it; I gave them my email address in case I could help with anything - not heard from them so assume they're O.K.
When Jean and I moved to Dover to buy the Linden Guest House in 1994, Folkestone Road had so many thriving B & B's and Hotels, now there's not many more than half a dozen.
A number of factors affected that, amongst them was the building of the Travel Inn (as it was called) shortly after we moved here and of course in the late 90s, we had all those illegal immigrants coming in and it killed most of the business here - it certainly affected ours.
Smugglers/boot-leggers call them what you will, also had an adverse affect, so we've had more than our fair share of adverse publicity and reasons for not staying here.
Thankfully most of that adverse publicity has now gone.
What is the name of the new one opposite the station ?

06:3867900The Linden has been bought by the owners of Sandown Guest House next door.
A lovely couple who both work very hard and are a credit to themselves and the accommodation sector in Dover.
The one with lots of hanging baskets nearly opposite Winchelsea (next to Webbs development), is Clare House I believe.
