21:5036030Tonight December 31st, 2009 will see its 13th full moon of the year, also known as a Blue Moon. While there are usually only 12 full moons per calendar year, 2009 marks the first year with 13 full moons since 1990. It won't occur again until 2028.

22:0436032I`m sure you know Jeane, alot of people refer to `Once in a blue moon` as never. Nice to have intelligent members on here who know otherwise. Best wishes for 2010 to you.
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.

16:0336070I saw it in Whitfield last night. I was just off to bed about two o'clock, put the light off in the kitchen and the moonlight came streaming through the window. I had to go outside to have a look and there it was, in a break in the clouds. Very bright but not much blue in it

09:1836110Yes Jeane was visible here very well although it did race behind dark brooding clouds throughout the evening, like it was performing in a hammer horror film, but it was a very gorgeous night if a tad cold. I didnt know that piece of info about the blue moon either...interesting. The tides were very high next day. Never quite sure why the tides are high at full moon...some magnetic pull I suspect, if anyone knows let us know. But soon, as time and tide waits for no man!

09:5136119Ok, when the sun and moon are aligned, there are strong gravitational forces, causing very high and very low tides. When the sun and moon are not aligned, the gravitational forces cancel each other out, and the tides are less dramatic. When the moon is full or new, the gravitational pull of the moon and sun are combined. At these times, the high tides are very high and the low tides are very low. This is known as a spring high tide. Spring tides are especially strong tides (they do not have anything to do with the season.)

I read or saw somewhere that the Moon is moving away from Earth at about a metre a year.Apparently its measured by aligning two receivers ,one on earth and one on the Moon and then sending a laser signal and timing its return.Millions of years ago the Moon would have appeared much larger when viewed from here and would have had a greater effect on Earths climate.
Told my wife your revelation of a blue moon...she said that it was obviously in sync with me offering to do the ironing...cheeky madam

10:2536126Interesting Marek.
Ha ha ha, I believe that the moon is a female energy as well as governing the tides it has a 28 day cycle which is the average length as a woman's menstrual cycle. I always feel a bit 'hyper' during a full moon, I often forget that it's a full moon but I have a moon phase calendar and then I check and I'm like 'oh right that's why'!
Full moon over Blackheath.
