Is this a good time for burying bad news? I notice that British Gas were one of the few organisations that did NOT withdraw its advertising from the NOTW too!

Exactly Helen. You can even get a knighthood for ripping us off, like Roger Carr.
We must not forget that the competition created by privatisation has been good for the consumer.

Of course it has been good for the consumer. We have competition and you can switch suppliers for a cheaper deal.
The old state monopoly would have locked us in to whatever they want to charge.
Howard - there is never a good reason to re-nationalise.

Yes competition has given the consumer the choice of who they get ripped off by and who they make richer.
Perhaps gas supply could be a big society project?

exactly the final bills are the same from each supplier unless you continually switch.

DT1 - if you really do prefer only dealing with State monopolies because you think they are so wonderful why not move to a country where you can do so....
let me see, where is there?
The old Soviet empire - woops that collapsed, ruined economically unable to deliver a 'first world' standard of living.
Communist China, - woops, they have been freeing their economy to stave of the same fate of the Soviets and the State now takes up only about 25% of their GDP, less than half here in the UK. No joy there for you any more.
So where is left - Cuba, nice climate - North Korea perhaps....
So why not put your anti-capitalist ideals into practise and move to one of these socialist paradises before they too collapse and have to re-join the real world.

Howard - Reviewing suppliers is a good idea every now and then but at least you have the choice and no, the bills do not all end up the same. It is called competition, its a wonderful thing that works.

This is very good news for us old OAP again, just what we wanted, We have our Heating Allowance cut by £5o and if you are over 75years old that cut is £100 and they put the Gas and heating bills up.but will they give back to the OAP the the sum of funding they are taking off us to help pay for that, It is a very big no to that, This lot must go from power the sooner the better.

Victor - lets get back to the real world. If you don't want to buy services from British Gas then take your custom elsewhere.

As a member of the working public that is the side I am always on.... I also live in the real world unlike some who have some kind of inexplicable belief that governments can solve all our problems, the truth is the opposite.

I was against the selloff of the Gas and Electric Boards but would not want to go back to them days, however Barry you may be right about competition being a wonderful thing, but is it not to keep prices down and give us choice. With the energy suppliers one puts the price up the other all follow within a few weeks, you change supplier because that one is cheaper and within a short time along comes the letter through your letterbox saying sorry the price has gone up.
Only two weeks ago I had British Gas knocking on my door telling me they were the cheapest supplier and how they had reduced their prices (don't they all say that) and then here we are with up to a 25% hike.
There should be stronger regulations in looking at the profits these Companies make and making them freeze prices when they make vast profits and making them reduce them when their purchasing price drops.
Competition only works if it is what it says on the tin, "competitive", when they all follow each other with the price it kills it and confuses the consumer.
