16:3741367Not being a press reader, whilst waiting outside the loo`s at Debrad`s today, I glanced a headline on a stack of freebie papers which I actually looked down at and read. Basically, it said all about the Canada (never heard of it) estate on the Buckland (heard of that) estate, being a role model for the country regarding the sorting out of unsocial behaviour, drugs etc. Someone from the government was there with a few other`s, regarding it`s success. The paper stated that, over 2 years, crime had been cut by 30%. So whatabout the other 70%? Sorry, I may be missing something here, but just quoting what I read. Not impressive figure`s to me.

23:3441407fair point colin.
nil points for not knowing about your home town though.
the problem with the canada estate as far as i can see is the design when it was built.
it has a lot of rabbit warren parts of it that make for hiding places and escape routes, not peculiar to dover but sympomatic of the age when the estate was conceived.

10:1041417Thank you Paul, and I`ve read through it, but I`m still wondering how a 30% crime reduction, can make Buckland a role model. It seems a low percentage to me, and heaven (figure of speech) know`s what other towns figure`s must be.............? Howard, I remember when it was all the Buckland estate complete with post war prefabs. Then as now, it was a rabbit warren, but didn`t have the problems of today. Even though you had the Canadian city names for address`s as you do now, I don`t know why they`ve stated calling it Canada estate.

11:1375196Dover's Tribute to the United States - December 1946
The below view down Maine Crescent in prefabricated Dover illustrates a selection of the myriad of streets of prefabricated houses in Dover England now springing up in parts of the town ravaged by high explosives. Though the breadth of England and the waters of the Atlantic now separate it's inhabitants from the thousands of United States troops who were stationed there during the war, names like Roosevelt, Winant, Washington, Boston, Carolina and Kentucky will remain as familiar words. In selecting the names of US Presidents, States and Cities for 'Prefabricated Dover" there is coupled the port's appreciation of help received from the US in the form of food, clothing and other essentials during the days of need for it's homeless inhabitants.
Been nice knowing you :)
