I have just read in another place that Capper's the Butcher in Charlton Centre has closed down. I hope not, I get pretty much all the family meat requirements from there every month.

I hope not too, Glyn is a good friend. I'll try to phone him and report back.

I was only talking to Mr Capper afew days ago and he told me he was doing well and was hoping that now most of the shops in the centre are in use it would even get better as I know him well if he was going to pack up he would have told me.He also is a very good Dover football club support.

Things certainly do not sound very hopeful, I hope Peter manages to make contact with either Glyn or Paul so we can find out what is happening. I know Paul was complaining he had seen very few customers for the time of day last time I saw him.

the charlton centre has never been so fully occupied so it is surprising if his trade is falling.

I have left a message on Glyn's voicemail.

Glyn called me back with the news that he has closed the shop permanently. A combination of increasing rent, murderous business rates, ever-increasing meat prices and a lack of footfall in the Charlton Centre have meant dwindling returns. The last straw was a monster electricity bill amounting to over £200 a week.
Glyn and Paul will concentrate in future on their other interests- raising cattle, pheasants, ducks etc., and training gun dogs.
We are very sorry to see them go but wish them all the best for the future.

Well, this is sad news indeed. I have read nothing but high praise on these pages for this butchery business.

Thanks Peter, that is such a shame but in a way I am not all that surprised I know the overheads there were crippling and their main money came from the wholesale side of the business rather than the shop. How many more times will we hear high business rates have been a major factor regarding small business closure
I also wish Glyn and Paul well with their existing projects.

Brian, I think you have to give your details to the Charlton Centre manager and you will then get a cheque soon after.

That's very sad news about the butchers. I popped by yesterday afternoon and saw for myself. Glyn has posted a notice in the window and all Christmas Club money will be refunded on request.
Wishing both Glyn and Paul all the very best. I'll miss our chats whilst buying all the meat. It'll be near impossible to find somewhere else with the same level of service and commitment to their customers as provided by Glyn.

we get all the hot air from government about revitalising town centres, even getting celebrities involved but if they asked most traders what would help the most the answer would be lower business rates paid to government.

#14, quite right, everyone wants to pay less and business rates are the unfairest form of taxation, especially on empty buildings.

15/16, I never find Veness and O'Brien have what I am looking for but Glyn usually did.

Which is why they were the best butchers in town, if they had not got what you wanted they would get it in specially.
