  In both pictures the upper clouds are cirrus, the lower are rather ragged cumulus. Plus a few vapour trails of course!

  No no no, Looking at the shape it was definitely stratus quo.
  
  Perhaps another forumite may be able to help us.

  As Peter says the first picture is definitely cirrus clouds, high altitude and composed of ice crystals. It must have been sunlight bent through these crystals that caused the stunning sundog Paul and myself saw earlier this evening.
  
  Stratus clouds are very low and usually rain-bearing, very different.

  took these about 3 p.m. quite fascinating as one takes some kind of human form.

  Yes Bern. Sadly (?) I'm member 17564 - you even get a little certificate to frame! I wonder if Gavin Pretor-Pinney, the founder, ever managed to get his stunning cloud type officially recognised as a new 'species'?

  Gawd, I'm no expert but these look like Cirrus to me, very high and composed of ice crystals. Sometimes these are man-made and are formed from aircraft contrails. I'm not sure if that's what we are looking at here though.
