those figures do not show unreported crime, where people cannot be bothered making a 20 minute phone call to report something.
A number of years ago I had an offside headlight kicked in one Friday night on my car which was parked just down the road.
I phoned up the police since in spite of the fact that they were unlikely to find the culprit nevertheless I thought it should be recorded in the local crime figures.
I was asked whether I would like victim support to visit and suggested that it would be a waste of time unless the bastard had a replacement headlight.

i suppose if you got mugged they would send for the pope, on the scale of things seems appropriate.
Scumbags broke into an 86 year olds house today and stole his tv. He didn't know until his carer arrived and he mentioned being excited about watching the match. She went to set up the tv for him and then realised what had happened.
The local pub on hearing this had a whip round and raised enough to buy the feller a second hand tv in time for him to see the match.
So, in our town we have scumbags and some brilliantly kind-hearted people. If I could only get my hands on the former...
