11:1311747Last evening at approx 8.30pm my house was plunged into darkness.I found my way to the front door to see all street lights out and my neighbours .The home accross the road was ok as they have an emergenct back up system By keeping front door open i was able to locate matches then candles .Mobile phone was found and I phoned my son who came round with a torch .Younger neighbours were walking up and down the street with torches and people were shouting out "Are you Ok" The main problemm was the lack of matches my young neighbour was out of them .I dont know how long we were in darkness as I went to my sons however on my return couple of hours later lights were on .It appeared to effect all roads off Chilton Way ,Common Lane and the top end of Lewisham Road.So always keep a torch or matches handy .The worst bit is the phone going ,so mobiles at the ready .Still we could have all gone over to Vics and had a party by candle light .

22:1011781Is there something you and Sue want to tell us Vic?
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

09:2411795Let me give you another short insight into community spirit
Where I live the lady next door asked if I had a mop, I asked why and she told me her kitchen was flloded cos her washing machine had broken.
I went into her kitchen and was then joined by another neighbour mopping out her kitchen, getting it dry, whilst I also took out the washing machine to the back garden saving any further flooding.
It was a great all round neighbour/community spirit
And I'm glad I was able to witness and be part of it.

09:3911800Just a technical note on what Sue said. I assume Sue that your phone is a "cordless". As a general rule these phones have no backup batteries and will go dead in a power failure. Everyone sould make sure that a "normal" phone is always plugged in. The phone system is powered by 50v batteries at the exchange.
Moblies should not be relied upon either, if the cell base station (green box next to a pole) is in the blackout area then the mobile won't work either.
If you need to rely on a phone make sure it's a wired one.

14:2311853Just a thought - do the emergency call systems go down when this happens (I am thinking about the Lifeline facilities)?

00:0512252To carry on this thread re Community Spirit .I dont always agree with my neighbour Vic however I think praise when its due.Yesterday he was busy placing Rock salt on our Footways and drives so it was easier for us to walk .Sanctuary Close rests in A hollow so the frost lies for days on end .Vic was his chirpy self scattering the rock salt around.
Sometimes Vic is the salt of the earth .Excuse the pun.Pity more people dont follow his lead as today people were moaning about the footways.A few years ago I cheerfully put salt out but these days I have to watch my step no one to look after me if I break a bone or two. Some people would rather moan than get off their **** and do something .I did my bit by ensuring the road was salted and the salt bin filled.Three cheers for Vic .I also reported the conditions of the footway in Pencester. You have to be very careful boarding buses .Sorry Berm mentioned the bus word .

20:5712302just to add to vic's post, if you have any old person close by, always have a quick glance to if there are milk bottles on the doorstep or post/newspapers sticking out of their letter box.
both are tell tale signs of possible problems.
with regard to garden birds, they will appreciate saucers/bowls of warm water being made available and replenished regularly. most of their usual drinking holes are iced up.
if you have a bird table, anything fatty, like left over bacon or suet will be appreciated.
finally there is a shortage of insects available for the a la carte type of bird, so any extra food will go down well.
sermon over with.

21:1112305But worth a mention, Howard - we put out the fatballs and water for the birds when it gets cold. And our neighbour always gets a listen and a look as she is an elder, although she is well supported. You can't be too careful.
