I would like to offer tips and advice on computer problems to forumites. I am not an expert, the nature of PC's is such, that they do things that can never be explained, much like teenagers, but I have got twelve years experience and if I can help in any way, I will be pleased to do so.

Hey Gary, I found the ultimate solution to ALL my PC problems. Windows XP was causing me so many headaches and so many hours of frustration, and then Vista came along and was quite possibly one of the worst releases of Windows ever since the ME edition. But I found an utterly astounding solution. Now I get no more problems, my computer experiences are always pleasant and simple, and everything always works exactly as it should. No more viruses or trojans, no more horrid security updates, no more crashing halfway through a job, life is pure bliss. My big secret? I abandoned PC altogether and got a Mac! Best thing I ever did!!

Funny thing that, my friend brought one in the week and asked me to set it up for him yesterday. it was my first with a mac pc and it was a pleasure, so easy, simple instructions, simple layout and very fast. Very impressed, not sure of your confidence with no virus's, some jerk will work a way to spoil things.

Ah, no they won't. That comment is the typical comment that most PC users express towards Mac users, "viruses will find you soon.."
Viruses are useless on the Mac's vastly superior OS. The OS is very secure and most viruses can do very little (if any) real damage to anything. When you think of it, there are millions of Mac users out there with NO virus protection whatsoever - brilliant targets for nasty virus writers. So where are all the viruses? Simple answer, it ain't worth the time trying to develop one. Virus writers don't only stick to Windows users because of the massive market share, they stick with it because Windows is so deeply flawed and easy to exploit.
Mac anti-virus software only performs one task, it scans and disables potentially dangerous files that MIGHT be accidentally passed onto PC users. For example a dodgy email attachment might go through a Mac and end up on a PC. Other than that, they are pointless on Mac.
And I cannot possibly tell you how bloody liberating it has been!!!
Anyway I'm glad you agree with how easy it was to set up. When I first set mine up, it came out the box, I connected up to the web and other devices, and was ready to go in under 15 minutes. My average Windows set-up could run into hours of sodding around!

Rick, I agree totally with Mac's superiority over Windows, simply by installing Norton or other virus detectors on windows you are actually inviting hackers etc.
The fact that Mac pc's connect to the internet, means, somewhere down the line, the same people will work hard on attacking Mac computers, I hope your right in having such faith, I will wait a little longer.
Setting up a new pc, properly with windows xp\vista can take around 4 hours and that is the initial problem, people think they can plug it in away they go, it will work, but then, as I'm sure you know, the problems start.

Are you thinking of converting Gary? You may find this article of interest...

I have always been tempted to make the move but have always been concerned about compatability issues.

BarryW,
Yes there are compatible issues, printers, scanners, word, work documents, etc, but most can be overcome with patches, not all, but most, Google Mac and have a read yourself. I certainly would recommend Mac.

Barry W, the only "problem" I had when I converted was having to buy new software. Unfortunately in my trade the software is mighty expensive - all the Adobe CS suite - but other than having to buy Mac software, NOTHING caused compatibility issues. Macs now run with Intel processors and they are very comfortable reading pretty much all your old PC files. All my old native Adobe files from the PC are still fine.
All your old JPEGs, Word Documents (more on this in a moment), spreadsheets, and whatever else you store and hold valuable should be fine on the Mac. You can buy Microsoft office for the Mac but my ambition is to live a 100% Microsoft-free life and you can download a legal FREE bit of software called Neo-Office which does everything Microsoft Office does! Word docs, spreadsheets, the whole caboodle. And it's FREE!!!!
As yet I have not encountered any compatibility issues with the small exception of a few native files created on a few old bits of PC software (a good example I can think of is Microsoft Publisher files, which ONLY seem to work in Publisher and nothing else).
As long as you are able to buy Mac versions of your main software then I recommend the change - it is far less painful than you can possibly believe, and once you've settled into the Mac your daily computer use becomes sweeter than a stolen kiss!

Thanks for link Rick, interesting points, he states "No virus's yet" & "Is Mac OS X immune to viruses? Absolutely not!
I brought a second-hand one today, so will brush up on it this week if I get time.
My friends Mac, is a new, 10.5.5 and although pc world sold him new printer with it, it was not compatible, printer only had drivers for earlier version's with no patch out yet, so they returning it today.
