Congratulations Nigel Collor!
- 25 April 2009 06:3120100I see in the hallowed but distant ( sorry guys couldnt resist!
) pages of the Dover Express it has been announced that our cheruby friend Nigel Collor has been confirmed as Chairman of the local Conservative Party. Nigel has been a Conservative for more than 10 years, so has climbed into the numero uno position slowly but surely. Ruddy faced Nigel, a hardworker with a penchant for the occasional pint, is my local Castle Ward DDC councillor so a big good luck to him. He is also a cabinet member of aforementioned Council speaking on transport issues.
Nigel will spearhead all things Tory, this encompasses the drive towards general election glory by ousting Gwyn Prosser MP and replacing him in the halls of hallowed power with another young cherub of increasing stature, one Charlie Elphicke. Whether this will ever happen remains to be seen but with the current unpopular position of the Labour government anything is possible.

This shows Nigel peering out second from the right. The chap on the extreme left, and Im not talking about politics, is Roger Frayne the outgoing chairman.

It is entirely voluntary but carries with it a lot of responsibility. You are subject to election/re-election each year but you are limited to no more than 3 years in the job. Madam Chairman is the correct and proper English, it was good enough for such great Chairman of this Constituency like Marie Cambell Rickets and Sheila Whiskar, so it is good enough for all. Sheila was the Chairman before me though she moved away before her term was up. So of the last 4 chairmen one was a woman, only 7 years ago.
Dont tell me that you have forgotten Sheila, Sue!!! Marie was also in your 30 years but then you were not 'one of us' then..... Ah well, here goes - "Chair" is the oldest form, according to online etymological dictionary, and "Chairwoman" dates back nearly as far as "Chairman", and both those are from the 17th century.
Delightful though men are, I would still nevertheless be miffed were I to be called "Chairman". I'm not a man.
An answer is personal preference. If a woman wants to be called "Chairman" instead pf "Chairwoman" (or couldn't care less what she's called, as long as she's in charge!) then that's fine. If a man wants to be called "Chairwoman" instead of "Chairman" then that's fine too.
Madam Mayor, anyone?
