10:4412697I must say reading this thread does remind me of the political clashes in the council chamber many moons ago .I recall young Sid Politt and his side kick I will not mention his name but I referred to them as the boys .Alas Sid left us but his style has not changed .Barry in one corner and a Labour member in the other .Its no where near as exciting these days .

20:2712748tell us more susan.
was our sid the "enfant terrible" of the chamber?
did the exchanges between barry and a labour member actually achieve anything, or was it just macho posturing?

23:2712774Full Council meetings always were and probably still are, no more than a 'show', with the real work being done in committees howard.

00:0412777very much like the house of commons then barry.
there are still councillors that post on here that we must go up to whitfield and view democracy in action.

07:5412778Better to see the committees in action than the full council, I would suggest, but the full council might be more entertaining.

14:1612792Even committee meetings tend to serve more to ratify the work done by some councillors and officers between meetings.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

23:5712834It isn't now either.
Planning Committee, Scrutiny Committees and others are all valuable ones where decisions and/or recommendations are made at those sittings, not just rubber-stamping as implied above.

13:0612863You may find this strange but Sid was one of our more quiet cllrs
didn't often spa at full council
but likeall cllrs had strong beliefs(which eve i dont always share)
but im more in tune with Sid than Barryw
but then because of my beliefs/upbringing etc and what i have seen and learnt in life
im leased Labour will be re elected
Sid keep posting mate!
they moan if you don't
then they moan if you do!!!

13:5812951Yes, I wasn't one for showboating or crowd pleasing at full council. I would like to think I was an effective and respected councillor in my time.
As I'm still young-ish maybe I'll go back to it one day, I'll probably have to be an active member of a political party for that though I suppose though.
