DDC PRESS RELEASE ****
FREE PARKING FOR DOVER
Dover District Council has announced free parking for Dover in a number of Council-owned car parks from 4pm to 6pm from Sunday 24 May to 29 November. Parking will be free between these times at the following car parks: Pencester Road; Camden Crescent; Albany Place; Stembrook; Priory Road; and Maison Dieu. This temporary reduction in charging hours represents the return of the temporary VAT reduction in car parking charges for Dover.

Well this above is quite good news isnt it. Its a return of our overpaid vat. There were some letters in the newspapers grumbling about the DDC holding on to the vat reduction...Nigel Collor, DDC Cabinet Member, got a bit of a slating as I remember, as there were indications that he had ignored the letters sent to him...but not so by the look of things. Perhaps industrious Nigel was working behind the scenes to introduce this reduction.
Every little helps as they say.
Oh jeez... even my everyday language has become Tesco value-range!

the shops close at 5 pm as do the coffee places.
it will be like supermarket sweep to do some shopping and have a cuppa in that hour.
Oh that is great news for me, especially as I get to Somerfields just after work around 5.30pm and have to pay to pop in and get a few little bits, now I don't have to worry about scrapping a 50p/£1 together (when I don't usually carry cash on me) in case of a penalty charge.

Considering Roger and myself were against the extra hour imposed ,and I voted against this move ;why now give Nigel credit for something which he has had to go back on. .Some of us were against the increases so lets not give glory to the person who brought the increases in the first place .

Well, that's inspired, isn't it? Free after 4pm, just like Deal? Feeble. Totally feeble. What's the point of that? It's not like we have much significant late night shopping in either Dover or Deal, nor a particularly thriving night-time economy, brimming with restaurants, clubs, cinemas, theatres, pubs, gastropubs and all the other trappings of 21st century western civilisation which can be enjoyed in other, properly-functioning, outward-looking British towns.
Let them eat scraps...that's all the parking-fine trufflers and taxpayer-farmers are saying to the beleaguered locals.
Sorry, but this is nowhere near good enough. A typical half-arsed fudge. It'll do nothing to stimulate the post-4pm (!) economies of our high streets.
I don't want to be a party pooper, but honestly, even when there is an event on the shops and cafes close bang on 5 and glare at anyone who dares to appear to want their service! I think it was when the lights were being switched on, or perhaps when the fairground rides were up in the square, but i went down to be sociable and would have sat in one of the cafes with a bite and a wet, but without exception they were vacuuming and scowling. An opportunity missed and a bad impression made!

spot on bern, happens every time.
whenever an event happens in the town, local shops and cafes put on no effort whatsoever.
they seem inconvenienced by the extra business.

Bern
Bang on.I couldn't believe it when they closed at 5pm when the Christmas light bulb was being switched on. I went for a beer instead but a hot Latte would have been far better.

I think therefore I am (not a Tory supporter)
Well, personally, I think it's okay. Better than nothing. The offer is there, but I guess it's up to people to either use it or whine about it.

I would say this is the perfect time for the shops to grasp the nettle and shift forward an hour, open at 10, close at 6. Give us the opportunity to shop after business hours without the need to go to tescos! We've all been whining about tescos since the year dot, now with a little organisation the shopkeepers can benefit!

I think you have a point there ChrisK.
Maybe when the local businesses find out about the free parking after 4pm, they may rethink their working hours: there again, they may not !
Sue is right that we both objected strongly to the car-parking increase and Sue voted against the extra hour from 5 to 6pm at Cabinet.
Whether it's a Tesco throwaway or not, Rick is right - every little helps.
