    REGENT IN DEAL

Dover District Council's Cabinet has taken the decision today to sell the Regent in Deal to Silver Screen Cinemas.

The Regent on Deal seafront opened in 1928. It was converted to a bingo hall in 1965, having previously been used as a cinema, but closed in January 2009. Dover District Council has considered a number of options for the site, and has taken all matters of community interest into account. Cabinet has agreed to sell the freehold on the Regent to Silver Screen Cinemas for cinema use only.

Cllr Nigel Collor, DDC Cabinet Member for Access and Property Management said: "We are very aware of the importance of this landmark building to the town and local people, and we have been very careful to come to a balanced decision. This has involved taking account of the merits of each offer received, and taking full account of all representations from community interest groups, including those supporting the development of a cinema in Deal, as well as financial considerations. This decision will enable the building to be brought back into community use as a cinema, and enable the Regent to continue to provide a key function in the town that people can enjoy."
