Disturbing picture, taken yesterday at Sandown end of Deal Beach.

Could you expand on what is wrong Gary?
[Maybe it's just me that has no real memory of the place to compare this photograph with.]

Tom.
Got some better pictures now from this morning at high tide. It will look even worse at low tide.
That should be a pebble beach, 100's of ton's of pebbles have been washed away.

There was this from Howard, with a link to a kentonline story from April last...

I'm sure Watty gave us a few pictures of heavy machinery in action too, sucking stuff from out at sea onto shore, I think.

Thanks Gary the larger pictures certainly show what has happened, do you know if the loss go all along Deal front or just Sandown end?.
Not at all good for the sea defences by the look of it.

The loss is extensive, from around the top of Farrier Street, all the way up to Sandown Castle and maybe beyond, I am popping up there later to take a look at low water.

Wow I doubt they imagined the new sea defences would have that effect on the beach,

I will have to check but looking at the photos, it looks as though they have removed the 'Groins'
That could be the reason for loss of beach, maybe?

I reckon you have hit the nail on the head there Gary, there was some suggestion the finance had run out so maybe the new groynes were part of the work not completed?

I thought they were shifting the shingle putting in a rock protection then backfilling.

I do not think the sea caused that to happen.

You could be right there paul but i am being told it was the easterly gale we had that moved it?

No big machinery was seen moving it but it could have been sucked up and moved down for the other end.
That would make sense and be a relief.

With the fence still up and the definite stop-line step it does appear that man has had a hand in it, but if a long wedge of shingle has been dug out they have certainly done a good job of hiding it.

There was no one there to ask this morning, they work the tides, so might get to ask someone later, if I get time.

I don't think that there is any need for alarm. This is not a case of anything being removed, but of things being added, in this case the ledge that you see.
If longshore drift was capable of this then the people living in Betteshanger will have clifftop properties within the year.
The ledge that can be seen has been built up, working as a service route running the length of the beach. The level of the beach (where the lady is with her dog) is where it has always been, the existing groynes providing a datum. The bullnose of the original defensive wall is now level this man made ledge, where in the summer it was a 4ft drop from the wall/path to the beach below..
It is remarkable the amount off work being done and at times quite disconcerting as it seems almost erratic...which of course it's not. The plans are up in The Royal and show the extent of this massive project.
It is a real shame that the beach has to tampered with but necessary I suppose. My only real dislike is the new sea wall being constructed by the shellfish stall, really quite ugly.

I have to disagree with "The level of the beach (where the lady is with her dog) is where it has always been"
I have fished that beach for nearly 50 years now an it has always been shingle, it is now much lower than usual and is sand.

Gary,
Not wanting to be awkward (I like your posts), I'll rephrase that as 'in recent months'.
I swam there (exact position) with my kids (I do not own goats) most mornings through the summer and I can assure you that this is the case.
