I just had a chance meeting with Menon and a visitor to the town on the seafront. The gentleman is here to see his parents and said he was naming the town Derelict Dover.
He suggested that until it's sorted the townsfolk take a councillor each week and hang them at the castle
Are you listening DDC, to what visitors to Dover thonk of the place? Get off your fat backsides and do something instead of just trying to win elections and opening church fetes

Councils encouraged to use powers to force empty property owners to 'clean up high streets, town centre or rural sites'
"3. Although the Government accepts the risk of avoidance activity is low, Local Authorities already have existing powers available to them to tackle some of the most obvious avoidance behaviour - for instance demolition and non-completion.
Section 215 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 (TCPA)
4. Section 215 of the TCPA can be an effective tool in requiring land and buildings to be cleaned up when their condition adversely affects the amenity of the area. Section 215 of the TCPA can be used on large vacant industrial sites, town centre street frontages, rural sites, derelict buildings, and semi-complete development and the scope of works that can be required includes planting, clearance, tidying enclosure, demolitions, rebuilding, external repairs and replanting...."

Quite the expert eh Tom?
Perhaps you can write to DDC and get them to look after their own derelict real estate

Back in 1990 I worked in a gift and card shop in Dover. An American Naval Officer called in to buy a postcard of Dover and asked for a pen to write his message to home, it read "Welcome to the a;hole of the world!"
Nothing has changed.

David I would be interested to know what you think DDC could do about the widespread dereliction
...bear in mind that here you are looking at a council so strapped for cash that they cant even afford to keep the fountain running.
Would be good to hear your thoughts on that?
My view is that the best and only way out of ruin and starvation is for somebody to give the town employment. Jobs on a grand scale would/will create wealth and as a result..the overall general everyday environment would improve as a consequence of the wealth creation.
I asked Charlie Elphicke when he was newly elected was there anything he could do about job creation. But even the MP honestly said all he could do was to press the government to make the conditions right to attract same...or words to that effect. He was honest about it. we sometimes hope an MP can wave a magic wand..but no.

reg drily refers to an east kent unitary authority in his post but i don't think that will make a difference. the issue of 215 notices has been aired here many times and on many threads. there is action going on with the town and district councils together with the dover society to pressurise rogue landlords to tidy up their premises.

# District Councils are impotent.out of date, passed their sell by date, Victorian......nothing will change whilst they exist......
East Kent as a unit has everything going for it........divided we have no momentum.............

PaulB, we have a regeneration officer with staff and dozens of councillors - what is the point of these people?
They clearly can't attract business to invest here, they can't tidy up their own real estate but bully local businesses, they make grand anouncements but nothing ever happens.
I'll tell you what they should do, resign in shame.

just to add to my post 9 most of the buildings that were issued with 215 notices have been or are in the process of being smartened up.
i tried to collar pat sherratt after the mayor making last thursday but he had to skip the free grub to attend a castle forum meeting, will try to contact him to get full up to date details.

Its all to easy to come on here slagging everyone off
I could easily slag off davids market, compared to how well Dover does, but it achieves little
Its about encouragement

You have absolutely no grounds to slag off the market, it is a success due to local people working hard together
The regeneration of Dover is a disaster, the people involved need sacking not encouraging.

I look at Folkestone Market weekly lots of stalls, packed and appear to be getting the custom
But im sure Dover will reach the same level in the future and should be encouraged to do so.
