The scramble by villages in the hinterland of Dover to associate themselves with Canterbury is quite striking.
Pick up a copy of Canterbury's local paper (Kentish Gazette) and the village correspondents' page tells its own story.
Aylesham of course has long since psychologically merged with Canterbury. But what's this? Eastry? Nonington? Even Eythorne and Elvington?
I have even met people from Whitfield who, not realising I was from Dover, described themselves as living 'between Deal and Dover'. Note the order.
Very sad.

Can't say I blame them, Canterbury or Dover?? hmmmmm...
Well, actually, I prefer Dover - Canterbury is a hotch potch of architecture, some gorgeous but some hideous, it's dirty and unfriendly - and yet it pretends to be grand!!! Perhaps if it didn't have pretensions I would like it more, but if Dover was scrubbed up a bit it would be comparable..........
Absolutely agree, Andrew.
And the proposed 10,000 or so houses mooted for Whitfield will only serve to benefit Canterbury too, creating a precedent for Whitfield to expand inland and focus ever more up the A2, rather than the town of its birth.
It will serve further to turn the real Dover down in the valley into an aching void, the hole in the heart of this frightening development doughnut.
Decent, affordable housing and redevelopment is utterly critical for Dover town centre, not its burgeoning Canterbury-facing satellite mega-village.

dear bernard
there is nothing pleasant about coming under an umbrella.
these village people should know this without me saying.

I'd rather stay dry under an umbrella than be accussed of being a member of the 'village people'

What next? The Pineham People's Liberation Front decides it wants to be annexed by Thanet?
I'm afraid the desire of these good burghers for Anschluss with the Canterbury Reich is going to be denied and they will be stuck with the Dover "Untermensch" whether they like it or not.
Snobs!
