I`ve been reading some of my books on Dover this afternoon, so, what about this for an idea? Very popular in a number of places throughout the country, guided walks for visitors. A few books with pictures of old Dover, a guide with a knowledge of the towns past, and a nice bit of advertising up the line somewhere. Would it be feasible here? Don`t forget the murder`s we`ve had here in the past. Should earn a bit of money for the town I`d have thought. All these cruise passengers wandering aimlessly about might enjoy it I`m sure.

Interesting John, I didn`t know that. Do you have any links with cruise companies? Bet a few of those passengers would love it.

The link is thru Visit kent,we are only the second area after Thanet to have Greeters, the idea started in New York, and is now spreading across the South East and France.

There is a good one on 13th June:
East Cliff Oddities - Then and Now
2.5 miles/2.5 hours/Grade 3
A circuit around the outside of Dover's main fortress to see the other historical sights that skirt around the Famous Castle. See the site of Bleriot's 1909 landing, the development of the Eastern Docks at the turn of the 1900's, the Royal Naval Seaplane Station and much more !
Meet at the St James's Church ruins, Woollcomber Street
Been nice knowing you :)
As John says there is the "Greeters" who do a great job but they do have to be arranged in advance.
For those wanting a walk through historic Dover to commemerorate the Millennium the Dover Society created ten plaques on buildings in Dover and produced a "self guided walk" leaflet. This is split into two separate walks.
The leaflet has been popular with tourists and again this year the Dover Society has printed these for the Visitor Information Centre.
So pop into the Visitor Information Centre and pick up one.
Great idea Colin. I have been thinking along the same lines. Surely it would not be too expensive to produce a leaflet with a simple map, with places of interest marked. A kind of trail that tourists could follow, even without a guide. The leaflet could be just black and white, very simple, so therefore cheap, and be placed in all the shops in and around the Market Square which is where tourists seem to migrate to. I have seen loads of them there, looking around but not knowing where to go. Even possibly be placed somewhere in the Cruise Terminal. It would not have to cost a fortune and would possibly lead to more interest which could be followed up.
Sorry, have just read above post, but I think that ten plaques for two walks is possibly not enough, and do visitors know where the Visitor Information Centre is? I don't!! It should be clearly signposted from the seafront onwards if you want tourists from the cruise ships to use it.
