an interesting site that seems to have fallen foul of the town council.

Maybe DTC can ask for the removal of maps from this site that they produced, but surely they cannot demand the removal any map of the town? What arrogant madness!

my understanding is that the head of tourism, sue jones, gave the original permission to put them on the website - later the town clerk sent a letter demanding that they be removed or permission asked in writing.

Not quite that simple Vic.
I get regular updates from Lorraine about her site and although she is not the most popular Lady in Dover, she does work hard and this web-site is a credit to her - and Dover.
It does seem petty to refuse permission to use the Town crest, bu they, what do I know ? (Nothing I hear you shout).

DDC have lots that they let people have - they are ex-ordinance survey ones, just out of date.

I could understand it if it were the crest, this is what Lorraine? has put on the site....................
"As a reaction to my husband's, Alan, campaign for advance rail fares to encourage tourists to come to the town, Dover Town Council (DTC) have ordered the removal of maps of the town and Dover's location in East Kent from this website.
Permission to produce the maps on the web site had been given but, it appears to me, that DTC had not envisage that the site would be so popular or that Alan might be successful in his campaign ... in other words they are concerned that tourists may actually come to Dover! ".............................

The website is not a credit to its author or the town with those comments on the front page.

I also thought that Judith, it is not the sort of thing that someone from out of the area should or needs to read.

The map in question, a copy of which can be seen in the notice board between the Town Hall and Maison Dieu House, was designed by Prosper Davis. It's available as a leaflet.
Although it carries the legend "©ProsperDavis.com" it doesn't say who published it. I always thought that was a legal requirement. However, be that as it may, it's very helpful in that among other things it gives the locations of filling stations. One is shown as being at Guston by the Chance Inn and another (wishful thinking) as being near Morrisons and ASDA!

Not pettiness, just copyright law - the reproducer needs written permission from the copyright owner/licensee to print/copy/electronically reproduce the item in question. When asked verbally a certain councillor intimated that she didn't see that there would be any problem getting permission if the requester wrote in and asked. The requester published without writing in to ask (so no written permission was given) and, when it was noticed, was then asked to remove the technical breach of copyright and advised that if written permission was sought, it would likely be granted in writing and thus copyright formalities would all be properly observed and everything would be hunky dory.
I'm sure that Lorraine would have been extremely upset if the Town Clerk had not advised her of the technical breach and she'd been prosecuted for breach of copyright by the copyright owner as a result. It seems to me a great shame that Lorraine says that she refuses to write and request written permission from the licensee, which would most likely be granted, and chooses instead to assign a different, and in my view incorrect, reason on the website in such a prominent spot.
A good website which had been promoting Dover in a good way now has a statement on its front page which is misleading in its content, damaging to Dover and undermining of the very purpose for which Lorraine says she set the site up.

Excellent post Neil, I see rather childish petulance reflected on that site not really what one would expect from an educated person like Lorraine Sencicle.
