sitting in the dentist's waiting room today, i was leafing through the reading matter,(some nice pictures of the 1953 coronation in one journal), i picked up the newish town council publication.
first class stuff, most interesting read, gives a good impression of our town, and on nice glossy paper too.
did everyone realise that the ceremonial mace is now 333 years old?
some of that bling that the mayor wears is worth a few bob too.

Yes there is a new one of these out..Im not sure if thats the one you are talking about Howard. The one with the Lifeboat on the cover. Yes beautifully produced in full gloss and at no expense spared. Totally the opposite to the DDC one which is too far the other way...as we said earlier printed on bog roll.
But its a headscratcher though as to who its aimed at. Its not of much interest to the local folk but if its aimed at the tourist then a one off A5 size would cover the ground at much more effective costing...ie no need to keep producing it...But then the Town Council has loads of money to spare!!?

As a local I found it very interesting PaulB, thats why I agreed to a double page spread. A good read for anyone interested in the Dover area and its history in particular.

oh yes ..I see that now. I missed that gem on first flicking through it. How to weather the downturn by BarryW, cant be bad. Will this mag have a good circulation though? I would never have got one as an average Dover citizen trundling my way back and forth to either Marks and Spencer or the pub, as its not available in the shops ie WHS for example. I was handed this from the boot of someone's car.

I'd love to see a copy of Dover Life.
Where can I get one? Is it only distributed out of the boots of certain people's cars, and if so which people, and which cars?
Or can I get a copy with a judicious nod and a wink to the right newsagent, who just might happen to, ahem, have one 'under the counter'.
Seriously, though I'd like to read this elusive glossy missive. Help!

Andrew I can let you have one on the black market for a mere £120.00....cant say fairer than that! As a sweetener I'll throw in a Michael Jackson concert ticket at the same time...now dont say Im not good to you!lol
But honestly and seriously though I dont know where you'd get one.

I think you can also find it in the offices/premises of all contributors, the Town Council offices etc...

You are quite right Brian, Dover hasn't much life but until it stops living for a war which ended in 1945 and which few have experience of it will never have a future.
You can never bring yesterday back but you can build for the future, if the future was embraced as much as the past the town would be thriving by now.

Totally agree there Dave.
Cherish and respect the past but stop living in it, and adapt and incorporate it into a brighter present and future.
Anyway, much of Dover's post-War heritage was decimated by appalling town 'planning' and civic vandalism long after the Luftwaffe stopped their little game. We can't keep blaming Adolf!

I think that in the 50s and 60s there was a plan to start with a clean slate and remove all remains of WW2, leaving many of the repairable building demolished. It was all the rage then to build 'cheap' put them up fast concrete buildings and build for the future. You can't really blame anyone locally and nearly every bombed town did just the same !
Been nice knowing you :)

Except, Paul, that most towns and cities who made those post-War planning errors have long since been re-developed, re-re-developed and re-re-re-developed in the intervening years. I say most towns and cities, but there's always an exception to the rule. And guess where that might be?!
The 50s and 60s were a long time ago.
Dover Life is available at Maison dieu house and at 41 castle st as asual. I hope it is also at TI and DDC! and many other outlets!

Think we have too many around this area - look at Canterbury with it's unfinished ring-road, must be the same designer as Townwall Street !!
