13:4636688Perhaps someone might explain what on earth the picture of Nigel Collor and the high speed train has got to do with the Deal and Walmer Chamber of Trade on page 24.

13:5036689Also Terry it was not Nigel Collor that got the high speed train to DOVER in the first place, our M.P. played a part in doing it.i think time is runing out for Cllr Collor and not before time to.

14:5236698No Vic, the main credit for that goes to Nigel, he ran the campaign. Our MP did help, true, but he has hardly shown any competence in any matter, let alone that.

15:0836699Sorry Barry do not agree, but agree that Cllr Collor ran the campaign to close the looes and he done that on his own with out any help even from his own party.

16:1036704Ive had the following email in from Graham Tutthill ace reporter Dover Mercury re this very thread and he has asked me to put it up on here, so here we go....
........
Graham Tutthill says...
Hi Paul
Don't know if you can add a comment onto the "Dover Forum" thread on the members' page of Dover Forum for the benefit of "Terry (somewhat baffled)". Our editor has pointed out that the photo of the high speed train is used because Bob Humphreys refers to it in his article (sixth paragraph from the end).
It might also be interesting to recall that the campaign to get the high speed link to Dover goes back to the 1980s when representatives from the Dover Chamber of Commerce put the town's case at several hearings, including a parliamentary select committee.
As we said in our Comment in the December 17 edition: "The arrival of this new service is the result of a lot of hard work and lobbying not just in recent years, but going back to the 1980s when the Channel Tunnel rail link was first being proposed. Dover Chamber of Commerce officials were among those who fought vociferously for the town to benefit from the new rail link, sometimes appearing to be a lone voice and almost ridiculed by others who thought there was no chance of it happening. Now it's here, and while those who have campaigned more recently are due some of the credit, we would not forget those who went before."
Thanks
Graham.

17:3136715I'm still baffled. My long standing friend GLT (about 40 years standing) quotes his editor Graham Smith as saying things about the Dover Chamber of Commerce. Er, yes but this was an advert by the Deal Chamber. What's the Dover Chamber got to do with it?
I still think that a picture more pertinent to Deal could have been used.

19:3436746I think the point about Nigel and others is that HS1 could pass thru Dover but without passengers because it was unsafe to evacuate thru the Shakespeare Tunnel.
The campaign that finally achieved HS1 taking passengers to and from Dover was the one that got the £8m investment in the Shakespeare Tunnel. I would stress Nigel played a very extensive lobbying role and personally met all the major decision makers in promoting Dover's case. As he still does, losing no opportunity to complain about two stops in Folkestone denying Dover the "Golden Hour" status.
Graham,I remember the Dover Chamber's campaign very well.
Vic , many people were invloved including Gwyn, who used his good offices and influence to arrange meetings with Ministers.

17:5836803QUOTE: Are there toilets on the high speed train......? Bern UNQUOTE
Post on a railway forum today:
As a Cannon Street station user I got a St. Pancras High Speed train home yesterday. It was a good job I didn't need the toilet. We were informed that EVERY toilet on the train was out of action, as the equipment to empty and clean the toilets was frozen. How in this day and age, when we have our lovely HS Link, can they not be able to provide working toilets on a train? The mind boggles!

18:1536807Ed so true that...had a text confirming that very thing from Briony and Colette on way to London yeterday on the High Speed Train to St Pancras, daughter returning to university, and no toilets were working and they were cold as was everyone onboard.
Wouldnt wanna be caught short there, which could be likely considering the cold weather

18:1736808Perhaps the HST should consider approaching DDC for sponsoring their toilets. "Flushing in partnership with Dover District Council"! Makes a great slogan.

19:5136825i don;t think that there was any doubt that it was a team effort to get the high speed train.
the success of their efforts means that we are getting our station tarted up nicely also, a win win situation.
all i have read on here about the journey time and the pricing is that the users of the train are very happy with everything, sorry to hear anout yesterdays problems.

20:4236841As a regular user of the High Speed Service, it does strike me as bizarre that they can spend millions of pounds on new trains yet couldn't find a way to keep the temperature in the toilet cleaning machines and/or the toilet cisterns above freezing; I mean how much does a a small immersion heating element cost these days. As for the temperature on the trains it is usually ok except if you sit under the dot matrix indicator board in the middle of the carriage as this is right below the air conditioning unit.
