Sail to New York - from Dover
Next year will see a cruise line operating luxury sailings between Dover and New York.
Holland America Line (HAL) has chosen Dover as its UK homeport for 2011 and will feature a number of transatlantic trips docking in the Big Apple - long regarded as the gateway to the US.
These will include nine round trips between May and August on two of its ships, including one of its latest Signature Class vessels, MS Eurodam.
Mediterranean, Scandinavian, Baltic and Norwegian-fjords cruises are also to be scheduled.
Kate O'Hara, marketing director at the Port of Dover, said: "We are thrilled HAL has cemented its commitment to the UK by choosing Dover as its homeport in 2011."
Lynn Narraway, Holland America Line's UK managing director, added: "We are delighted to have two of our premium ships homeporting from Dover for summer 2011.
"This shows the brand's increased commitment to growing passenger numbers in the UK."
Been nice knowing you :)

Very exciting news this, and it should be an incentive for town and DHB planner`s to get busy and do something positive with it. I know a few locals who`ll be seriously considering a cruise to New York, and I`ll get them looking in this morning. Thanks Paul, great news to wake up to.

Very interesting news there Paul.
Pic here is the very large EURODAM doing a 360degree turn outside my rear window about 2/3 weeks ago. It is unusual for them to do a complete turnaround but thats what she did. I see Your Dover didnt have a picture...oh dear!

There is much literature (including my Discover Dover leaflet) at the cruise terminals that is handed out to the cruise pasengers who are coming in to Dover, as well as Horace in the Market Square on the appropriate days, so there is information given out.
What I believe is essential, is more co-operation and co-ordinating, between the Cruise Terminals and the Town Centre.
All businesses should know when cruise ships are in and whether they are a Port of Call or a Turn around (and what the difference is).
Notices in the windows, bunting up (with Mickey-Mouse ears when Disnery ships are in) and with that £200,000 from the Retail Park, it could make a big, big difference to the Town and how people feel about it.

That sounds like brillant news only been to New York once, but to sail there sounds like a very leisurely way to go rather than cramped in an aircraft for a good few hours

I am looking forward to seeing the new ship and even more than that the public from the USA lets hope we can find away of keeping some of them in Dover for a week and not geting on the bus to London in the same day.

There's more than enough to see here, especially if you are combining East Kent.
Large sites like the Castle will get the biggest bite of any cherry, but the smaller sites need to be promoted too - and the Town itself, smartened up in time; this can depend on when that £200,000 comes on stream and what it is decided to spend it on. Lobby now and I'll make sure the relevant person knows what you want done.

Fab news - that will open up a few opportunities for us personally as well as for Dover (if Roger is listened to, of course!)

No thoughts from anyone on what they would like the £200,000 spent on, Bern.
Maybe we'll just leave it to the Senior Regeneration man at DDC, he knows what he's doing; I just thought local people would like to give their ideas, show we're pro-active, not reactive and grumble when it's not spent on what we'd prefer.

That amount of money doesn`t sound alot to me Roger in view of what needs doing in the town. Rather than spend a bit here and there though, I`d suggest doing maybe just two or three projects with it, that won`t need an army of consultant`s to syphon most of it off, as a member has already mentioned, and we have something to show for it at the end of it all.

£200,000 could go a long way to brighten and smarten up the town and much of the street-scene Colin, which is where my suggestion would be.
Perhaps a 50% grant or similar, could be offered for some of those buildings that need doing up.

Hopefully the powers that be could use it to tidy up the eye-sore opposite the italian restaurant in King Street off Market Square, closely followed by 'the crypt' debacle. Flatten them both would be a good decision.
