11:4135918I originally posted this thread on the front page but thought it may be appropriate to learn what members think about the idea..
Has anyone ever thought of having a 'Hollywood' walk of fame type thing where famous channel swimmers past and present could be remembered by some sort of an emblem on the pavement (sidewalk) similar to the Hollywood star.Starting with Capt Webb and working its way through the first female swimmer, youngest, fastest, return or relay teams etc..etc.It could be another fantastic attraction yet unobtrusive addition that may interest and draw visitors to Dovers elegant Victorian seafront.
Having re-thought the idea the walk of fame could also contain great Dovorians or those persons with whom Dover is linked..Churchill,Ramsey,Caeser etc.

12:2135922Sounds like a good idea, Marek. Dover's heritage is second to none and we should be exploiting it to the full. There are many famous people/events linked to the town and this could be highlighted in an event that would draw positive attention to the town. Perhaps a Heritage Week in which the Castle/Painted House/Bronze Age Boat/Western Heights (amongst others) were all clealry linked? It could culminate in the Regatta or Carnival to add to the buzz.

17:5835942I think that this (heritag week) is something that the Festival of Dover could have caught onto better and act as a great facilitator for this to happen, but that was rather a damp squib and should have been more like a month rather than a year 'event'.
I am sure the Western Heights Preservation Society would be keen to be involved should it be well run....
Been nice knowing you :)

I think you are right. I organised for David Flood from Canterbury Cathedral to form a choir to perform some music by Thomas Tallis and contemporaries at Dover College, the site of the old Priory where Tallis first came to note. I think the Festival had some merit but stretching it over a year was over ambitious. Perhaps Vic would like to have some input as it was his idea and did generate some intersting activities.

18:4935944Thank you for that Mark ,has you all know it was my plan and I had a very good committe but I called it the festival of Dover and that was not the right name for it.It was all about what dover had already all the year round with some new events added to it,also to try and stop the clash we had at some weekends of more then one event stoping some of the public geting to all of them.I am still trying to do it again in 2012 but this time same committee but the festival of new events will be for 2or 3weeks only but still telling the public what is going on all the year round.I did make mistakes and we will not go into that anymore and they would not happen again+now I do not work i can gave it alot more time.I have not said anything yet to the town council but I have put the word round that i would like to try again and even if at that time I was a m.p. it would not stop me.BUT we do have the Gen /Election coming up and then the local ones so it is all wait and see.But I still think i could do a good job of it.

08:0935965Dover's heritage sites could easily be linked - in more ways than one. With the Western Heights weekend, as well as the Heritage Open day/week-end, where all historic sites in Dover are opened to the public for free; this links them all in a common bond.
There is also Richard Mahony's White Cliffs Tour Bus and Dave Atkin's classic buses that can and do take people on a tour of Dover's sites; Dave's go to the cruise terminals, Dover Castle and Market Square, but both needs beefing up to be established services and sponsored with funding to enable them to be done.
I am working on a Winter tourism initiative (for up to the end of March, at least) that will involve taking people round (linking them all together) to our historic sites, but of course it needs (financial) support.
On the "Dover's Hall of Fame" I know that when the Town Council did this for the pathway to/from the band-stand in Pencester, the paving stones were quite expensive and were sponsored by businesses and individuals; maybe it could be done again, starting at or near Dover's beginning (when exactly was that then ?) and continuing up to the present day.
You'd need sub-group set up, maybe of the Dover Society or Western Heights Preservation Society, or similar to work it all out.

The @Walk of Fame' was more about well liked and loved individuals who have or had close links with the town rather than businesses using the walkway as a permanent bill board.Apologies if I have taken it the wrong way.
I was thinking more of a tourist attraction maybe even hands and feet imprints of any visiting Hollywood film star who shoots in Dover.Wouldn't it have been nice to have Peter Barkworth and Hannah Gordons imprints when they were in Dover filming Telfords Change? or some of the stars that have been filmed when using Dover Castle as a backdrop.Didn't Sean Connery film at the Eastern Docks when doing an early Bond movie? I remember an old colleague telling me of the fuss that was made and the disruption that took place during filming. The publicity it would attract could be good for the town and tourist trade.

12:2835983It sounds like an excellent idea Marek, a positive idea to offer something new for visiting tourists on their visit to 'The Gateway to Europe'

Thanks for your support. I really do believe that Dover has something to offer other than a quick but sometimes uncertain passage to the continent. It's just a pity that the DDC are so stuck in the doldrums.
Thank God for Roger W,David H and even that die hard old tory Barry W.

09:0536039Marek, I wasn't talking about promoting businesses, but this Walk of Fame or whatever it would be called, would need to be paid for and I know DDC couldn't/wouldn't fund this, I doubt of DTC would either, so it would fall to the businesses and if they get publicity for it, why not ?
Maybe the Harbour Board would look upon it favourably, it would need their permission if it was on the seafront.

Point taken but as a die hard red under anyones bed I always have upmost respect for our Labour councillors, yourself JHG etc but thought I would mention a few from the 'other side' for a change.JHG and yourself work and have worked tirelessly for Dover for years and I hope will continue to represent the views of us 'die hards'.

08:5036100Let's not start the year off with petty politics.
Just because Marek mentioned a few names, doen't mean they are the only ones who work hard for Dover and various aspects of it; but to grumble about those who are mentioned seems rather petty.
Like the New Year's Honours list, the few mentioned and honoured are just the tip of the iceberg of deserving people; you can't mention everyone by name.
Marek, if you would like to email me with your thoughts and perhaps put some detailed ideas down, I'm sure I can talk to people "in the know" as to whether it has merit and legs, or not.
Funding will still be a big issue (no I'm not selling it outside M & S) !!.

why not ask dover pride, if they cannot contribute, they can at least let you know how and where they get their money?
