Unless I have missed on another thread can anyone update why the crosses are not on the Western Heights this year.
I have been working all weekend and whilst these are usually visible on Good Friday nothing is there as at this evening (Easter Sunday).
I thought there was the usual procession organised for Good Friday.

Scheduled Monument Consent !!
Been nice knowing you :)

Does this mean Consent was not requested or was Consent requested and refused. If the later who refused it???

Sorry, I know nothing, just wouldn't surprise me with the people on the other hill !!
I am wondering though if it is to do with the grazing that now takes place on that hill as there are Dexters up that area and they probably wouldn't wouldn't be too impressed with crowds....
Been nice knowing you :)

As you know for 2 or 3years I did carry one of the crosses up the hill myself but because of my leg I had to stop doing it,last year was very bad weather,I do not know why it was not done this year, but if I am better next year and they let me then I will do it again but only if I am up to it.bUT yes they are missed.
Thanks Paul
If no other forum members can give the reason why no crosses on the Heights this year and it is as you think re "Monumnt Consent" then I shall ask EH at my next meeting with them.I am sure the Dexters would have loved having the crosses to rub against.
Vic....Keep up the recovery, you never know if they are permitted next year they may need your muscle
Consent refused so as not to offend the Mussies and Shonkers.

Sorry to hear that they werent up there Pat. I havent seen them myself this year either but have noticed them in previous years and always very good to see them, as Easter is that bit special. I think its important that we try and keep our Christian heritage alive, despite all the flack, so its a sad day if this idea has gone for a burton.
There are three crosses outside the central Church in Biggin St so whether these are normally the three crosses used i dont know.
Paul. It would be sad if this anual tradition has been stopped due to some form of legislation.
I also noticed the crsses outside the church and it is these that are normally carried in procession to the spot above Cowgate Cemetary

I did pop on another thread but here are the 3 crosses again.
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.
Thanks Colin for the pic

i am missing something here, why would english heritage object to the crosses up on the heights?
not like them to show an interest in the western heights.

Howard,They have the last say because it is on the sky line.
Howard
Not sure that EH have objected or if the church even made a request. This is why I hope Vic can establish as per post 15.
As Paul indicated under post 5 there may be a need to secure permission if the site is now subject to "Monumental Consent" . I understand much of the Western Heights is now under the "stewardship" of EH as (quite correctly) the Napoleonic Fortifications need to be protected.

Rather off topic, but fortunately we (WHPS) are getting more support and have someone who is dedicated (to 60+ unmanned sites but the Heights is the largest) so more eyes are now on the Heights.

interesting stuff paul, about time some time and money was spent up there.
totally wrong that a voluntary organisation is required to keep a national treasure alive, without outside support and funding.
