Electricity Shortfall

  Just had one of those letters dropped through my door..you know the ones that tell you about impending roadworks or gas main re-jigging or whathaveyou. This time its from EDF Energy telling me that my electricity will be switched off tomorrow sunday aug 22 betwen 16.00 hours and 21.00 hours. That's between 4 and 9 in old money. Most of the main part of the day.
  
  What the sam hell is one supposed to do with oneself with no electricty? Gulp!
  
  Thats no computer, no email, no TV, no kettle, probably no phone, fridge leaking all over the floor...I mean what is one supposed to do with no electricity, one is dependent?? I suppose I could go for a walk shock horror!!
  
  It seems that the problem could go on for even longer than 9pm as they have mentioned this in passing...it seems a fault needs repairing somewhere. No doubt my fellow citizens around here have had the same letter.
  
  But Im cheering myself up...as on the back side of the letter are survival tips!

  Relax and enjoy the calm that is brought by no electricity. This was a daily unplanned occurence in Lagos, often lasting a good deal longer than 5 hours, unless the man who controlled the switch could be bribed to turn it back on!

  Yes survival tips like...
  Throw a blanket or rug over your freezer to keep the temperature down
  
  and/or
  
  dont open freezer unless absolutely necessary
  
  or
  
  if you need to use a generator get it fitted by someone knowledgeable
  
  or
  
  Remember to switch off your sensitive equipment...oooh I say!!
  
  There's more but Im off now to switch on my kettle and revel in the luxury!

  Red Alert to PaulB....... for gawds sake don't switch off your sensitive equipment, at your time of loife it may never work again I'll be around later with a flask of hot soup not!!

  ColetteB I havent been insulted like that since.. since.. since...well it must be yesterday!! But yer right if I switch off my sensitive equipment I could be in trouble. Best to keep it fully plugged in and use it as much as possible that way it stays functional.
  
  On a slightly serious note this will hold up doverforum frontpage production..is there somebody I can sue!!?

  As long as your sensitive equipment is well wrapped up you should be fine..........I hear it's the cold more than anything that reduces its efficacy........

  I didn't get one of those letters Paul so gather I'm safe? So, you can always take refuge in my place....I might even lend you my laptop if your withdrawal symptoms start becoming too much to bear!
  
  That's awful short notice though isn't it? You'd think it would be best done on a week day when most are at work.
  I know a million ways to always pick the wrong thing to say

  Paul, a good time to relax and forget the forum, tv etc, just eat drink and be merry at Jeanette`s, plus all that free view outside your window should stop you getting bored.

  Before the power cut fill several flasks with boiling water. Get some candles and matches ready to light. Make sure your portable radio has batteries in, or use a wind-up radio for some relaxing music by candlelight, and you can make coffees with the hot water...
  We often have power cuts in the winter here in the village... some have lasted quite a long time...
