08:429843Very sad indeed Howard - for everyone.
Maybe their ticket pricing structure was wrong, maybe whoever bought their fuel
mis-calculated the cost, maybe their marketing Mananger didn't promote the company well enough, but whatever the multitude of reasons, owing the Port of Boulogne over £800,000 and an undisclosed sum to The Port of Dover, meant they could never regain enough business to pay it all back and continue being a discounted ferry business.
A BIG, BIG shame.
Roger
PS: I had a complimentary ticket to take the car to Boulogne - no good now.

09:379847Its a definite shame that 100 people are losing their jobs. I didnt realise they employed that many people..goodness that is a blow for the workers as there appears to be little available in the job market at the moment.

11:029852It is a sad loss for Dover to lose yet another major employer, especially when I heard on the news last night that staff were putting in unpaid time to keep everything running as smoothly as they could. As you say PaulB the job marketplace is getting smaller by the day, I hear of so many people getting laid off on the build-up to Christmas.

08:209887Yes Brian - they both went into Receivership yesterday afternoon.
I think the nearest MFI was at Ashford, so probably not too many local (to Dover) workers there, but it's all the spin-off trades that will be badly affected - Schreiber and Hygena (not sure if Schreiber bought out Hygena while ago) who, amongst others, make the kitchen and bedroon furtniture and all the other allied trades, will be laying off people too.
Woolworth's has been a High Street institution for 99 years, so a very sad day for all concerned - staff and shoppers.
I do hope that the Receivers will find a way where both be able to continue trading, if not Dover will have a gaping hole in the (metaphorical) High Street as will many Towns and Cities up and down the Country.
