They are really beautiful Kath. I have one cactus (for 3 years) but no flowers on it.

I did wish to remark Jeane, that perhaps what you have 'nourished' for three years is not a cactus but a pin-cushion...then I saw this...

Well done Kath, a stunning array, although Howard could easily be remarking upon day-trippers along the sea front.

Ignorance is bliss, bliss is happiness, I am happy...to draw your attention to the possible connectivity in the foregoing.

Maybe that's where I'm going wrong Tom!

The main essentials of cacti are: MAXIMUM SUNSHINE (window essential), watering about once a fortnight (ONLY if completely dry) in the summer ONLY. Keep away from frost but not over warm.
If you can't repot them after 2-3 years, feed with maxicrop or phostrogen.
If they are the kind to flower when reasonably young they should flower given a lot of sunshine! If not, they may have to grow quite large, like this one (which is nicknamed 'Mother in law's cushion' )- which was growing in a very large bucket.

More modest plants...
flowering grasses in the field next to our garden - very tall now and should be taken off soon for hay. Wild flowers are a bit lost at present, but the grasses are lovely !

here we have one of the participants in the "elvington in bloom" competition.

Here is an Epiphyllum hybrid in flower now:
Dandelions are very useful plants, Howard - for the bees, and for making wine!

Lovely pictures, Kath. I once sat on a cactus unawares, only becoming aware of it when it was too late.

indeed they are alex, i will make a note to resurrect this thread in the depths of winter when we need cheering up.
re; dandelions
our family tortoise passed through generations saw them as a great delicacy.
he would munch gently the leaves and the coup de gras was when there was just the flower left and his head and neck stretched out and bit off the head.
i used to be sent out as a kid to dig them out of the cracks in paving stones.

If anyone wants to come and look at our plants anytime they are very welcome, just contact us.
Yes, we are very lucky with a view over the field (which has for many years been 'set-aside'). Lots of grasses and flowers just now, and the other evening lots of bats over the garden.
Lots of grass though to mow and our mower has packed up for the moment! A friend coming next week to mow it for us!
I'm sure other forumites have some lovely flowers out -

Alexander -
All you need (!) if you accidentally sit or snuggle up to a cactus is a good magnifying glass and a useful pair of tweezers and someone to get the spines out who has a lot of patience!
