The rude version of a two fingered salute derives from the English Longbowmen. The index finger and middle finger were the two digits used to pull back the string on the bow.If an archer was captured the French often chopped those 2 fingers off therefore ensuring that they could never draw a bow string again. After battles the English bowmen would often stand on top of the hill giving the 'v' gesture to the French indicating that they still had their 2 fingers in good working order.Hence the Harvey Smith gesture entered into our folklore.
