22:5370437the fact remains that peter did not have one vote to his name, did not do much for his ego, he disappeared at the next election.
used to be a poster in the old days.

22:5570440Actually Howard, Peter fought the next election but wasn't elected, same as little old me.

10:5570523Keith, posting 79 line 4 was a close call, almost bought a new meaning to 'standing' for a seat. Peter did stand in a ward that would have been difficult to win for him, which came as a surprise to everyone. He was a genuine loss to the council as he only ever put forward a balanced arguement in debate.

18:5270627I've always found Peter to be a very fair-minded man too, Ken.

18:5770629I cant comment as I Dont know MR Drew that well.
He wasn't co-opted then?
What ward did he stand?
Twas such a long time ago.
He was one of many who were asked to stand for the indies by a so called impartial person in the community.
All admitted at the time, but i'm sure will be denied now.

07:4270776No Keith, he did not. I was the last Conservative DDC councillor for Barton (along with Clive Hyde) and stood down at the 1995 election (work and wife's ill health). Labour won the seat in the 1995 landslide sadly.
The new Labour Town Council (previously we had Charter Trustees) in a blatent spot of gerrymandering later on helped convince the electoral commission to do away with Barton splitting the ward between 3 safe Labour seats. An appalling act that is a blot on the name of DTC to this day.

08:0270778Barry it was the DDC(Labour controlled then) who put forward Barton as one of two wards to be sacrificed to appease the electoral commission. I along with George Allt were the District councillors at the time. The Labour party were trying to get rid of me even then but George and I were promoting the building of Aldi in Cherry Tree Avenue which was seen as opposition to the CO-OP who indirectly funded several Labour councillors who were members of the Cooperative Labour Party.

08:2270782Thanks for reminding me Ken.
DTC were, I am sure, very active in supporting and pushing for the abolishion of Barton. I was involved in putting together an alternative case for the Conservative Party - at the time our case was weakened because we were positioned as a political group against DTC and thought that we should have made a stronger point that DTC was 100% Labour at the time.

09:3070800I agree with what is being said, but both Peter and I were co opted as there was no one in the ward that wanted to stand!
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

09:3370802That's not yours or Peter's fault John, so why is he being sarcastically attacked?

10:3670820There you go then, there was no election.
Just shows that SID your discussion doesn't hold up
On the one hand you say its wrong that labour was 18 strong and didnt have election and you wanted an alternative to labour(no prob with that)
but then ou say its ok not to go for an election with mr drew and now it appears our john.
My view is that it would be nice to have all seats contested so people have a choice, but sadly the indies never fight them all(so-z nor do tories)

12:5370869There you go again Keith, claiming folks have said things they haven't. Obviously a well tried political tactic designed to get folks onto the back-foot.

13:5970872Town Council vacancies were announced at the time in the press and by notice board, the required number of signatures were not received by the council to trigger an election as required by electoral law so co option was instigated has it had been done for many previous sitting councillors including myself
I don't believe any councillor had faced an election until the 'Indies' were formed and there were many major casualties who fell to them, the little rascals.
