07:5327093Sadly Roger, I have to say that the NHS was one of her failures as she did not reform it. Major tried but it was inadequate and half hearted.

08:1627098No Brian, that is not what you have said. Mrs T did not reform the NHS but neither did she undermine it or starve it of cash as you suggested. I repeat, she increased the budget for the NHS above inflation every year and to be fair so did Major.

I am not sure about your analogy. It would seem to me that the child has done well in his GCSEs but, rather than celebrating, you are choosing to focus on one area where he has not done so well.
Had you called this thread: "UKs poor public spending record" rather than the more sensational "Greece and Ethipia doing better than the UK...." your claim for a free standing issue would be stronger.
Perhaps you should take the now well established Tory route out and claim that it was all a joke!!

10:1827105Unfortunately the mess Labour have made of the economy by their wasteful public spending (and other measures) is no joke.

19:4327150If the outcome is the same, what's the difference? Semantics, is all!! One mans reform is another mans ruin....or something like that!!

21:3427161Sorry Barry, but to misquote "methinks you complain too much" - you played the usual politicos trick of a sensationalist headline and some facts quoted out of context, and then try to cry foul when we all refuse to fall for it.

05:1127170Totally disagree Ross. It was in a single clear context. You are the one complaining to much, trying to excuse this Governments record.

06:3227173Blimey, I thought we might agree that every government sucks.

23:1727247I am not trying to excuse this governments record, but equally I am not failing to recognise when they have done ok or better as you are Barry.

08:4727259I can see only two things this Government has done right, Ross, and that is keeping us out of the Euro and banning smoking in pubs and restaurants.

06:2927310t now transpires that a number of members from the shadow cabinet have also put their names down in support of Hannan and the dismantling of the health service.Remember when it comes the time to vote that your life is in their hands
Barack Obama's stepmother praised the NHS it apparently saved her life 6 or 7 years ago when she had kidney problems,
My point is that although the health service may have its faults its still far safer to fall ill in this country and be treated than it is to fall ill overseas where upon admittance they first carry out a check on your credit card or means to pay before they check your vital signs.
I for one fully embrace the NHS warts and all. We all should thank God or in Ricks case the Godess of Technology...lol..that we live in a country where expert health care is available at the point of need and not by what you can afford.

07:3227319If you fall ill overseas (particularly in Europe), if you have your NHS card on you - I think it's an E110 or similar, you will receive expert medical health for free.
The health service provided in Spain, France, Germany and most of Western Europe, is second to none and in many cases, better that our own NHS; that's not to say I don't support it - I do - to the hilt.
It needs better running and money put into the right areas.

Think the E110 form has been replaced(my boy when going abroad had a diffrent form)
What we want is a clear committment from the tories that theyu believe in and will support the NHS at the moment a large number of tories are coming out of the closet as MAREK says to not support the NHS
WE NEED TO KNOW
Maybe DC is counting the days to a leadership challenge? or maybe he knows ones about to happen?
Theres certainly a lot of discontent in the tory ranks

You are correct there is discontent amongst the rank and file in the Tory party with DC who I think in many ways is a decent chap but his policy on Europe, his support for the war in the middle East, his ideas on the NHS and his plans to overhaul Thatchers introduced school league tables have incensed some old diehard blue true tory back benchers. They now feel that a Tory govt is guaranteed but are not sure that they want DC as their leader or the countrys next PM. Beware the Ides of March.

19:0327364exactly marek, get the acceptable face in, then after the election!!!
mind you, i seem to remember that mrs t was seen as the vote winning one in 1979, and that keith joseph was waiting in the wings for after the election.
