Happy Easter Jeane and everyone.
Usually Easter is a greatly busy time on the ferries...thousands pass through Dover. The hotels are usually packed, the roads are usually packed. This time it looks a good deal quieter. That large hotel opposite yours truly looks quieter than a normal Easter because there are many spaces in the carpark, although some filled too..but not up to days of old. Whether its the recession or the bad weather thats hitting things I dont know. The sea is rough and so on. Maybe its an Easter to stay at home.

Have a nice long weekend one and all. Don't forget that the big shops are closed on Sunday.

The weather looks O.K. for Good Friday, not sure about the rest of it though.
Peace and goodwill to all.

I do love a nice traditional holiday weekend.
Operation Stack up and running and Seafrance on strike for 48hrs! Who could ask for more?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/kent/8600704.stmAh, the intelligence (lack of) of Unions and workers rears it's ugly head again. SeaFrance is in desperate financial trouble and seeking permission to ask for a government bung to stay alive. So, the Unions decide it is a good time to call a strike. It never ceases to amaze me how dumb people can be. What don't they understand about no revenue = no company = no jobs? Changes have to be made quickly if SeaFrance is to continue.
No brownie points either for the management for allowing this situation to happen. They should do their job and manage the company properly, and that sometimes means seeing the problems before they hit and taking decisive action.
I sometimes wonder where common sense went. Both the company and the unions have a vested interest in keeping SeaFrance alive, yet they don't appear to be working together to make it happen.

This was apparently a wildcat strike called by the CFDT over a manning issue on the SeaFrance Rodin. This comes only days after SNCF announced a decision to grant SeaFrance €170m in fresh financing, subject to EC approval. It does seem as though the union members have a death wish although it comes against the background of several hundred job losses negotiated in order to qualify for the cash injection.
The strike could not have come at a worse time as their ships were fully booked over the Easter weekend as with the other operators. The docks were bursting and the SeaFrance strike necessitated Operation Stack being put into force. I was supposed to be doing a trip on the Maersk Dover whilst on leave, as I did on the Maersk Dunkerque the day before, to advise a contractor on integrating new equipment with an existing set-up, but I only got there by the skin of my teeth and he never made it at all!

A few people about early this afternoon, and a bit of activity in the harbour with the container ship arriving. Pleasant bit of sunshine, though a little on the cool side. Not cold though.

We have just got back from the Fowlmead Country park it is realy a great place to go for the whole day,you can walk or even hire a bike so much to see and do there,I do some work there before it was open and we have been going back time and time again, and even more now I can walk better still need my wife and stick but geting round better then I was.
Spent the afternoon over at Folkestone sea front. Pleanty of food stalls open, music, and lots of people enjoying the good weather and somewhere with a bit of atmosphere. The place was ALIVE! How was it on Dover seafront today? Closed I suspect.

I was over in Ramsgate Sid and very pleasant overthere, busy when the sun came through but bitingly cold. New ferry system in place over there now too with LD lines now plying trade from there on a daily basis.Everything was open, and of course they have literally wall to wall harbourfront cafes and restaurants...and all appear to be doing well. Very pleasant harbour.
One thing I can say about Dover on the day prior, Easter Sunday...the seafront hotel, the only one left now, the Premier Inn ( Millers) was fully booked for sunday lunch. It was quite a good place to be with lots of buzz, lots of families and a few familiar faces. There's no doubt about it now.. these types of places, like Toby type places, are thriving so are clearly what the public want.
Well Dover Seafront should soon be buzzing. After all, we are getting a wonderful new look - wavy walls for people to sit on, and even wavy walls on the beach. Really useful for attracting the punters I should have thought. We can all sit on them and contemplate the really really lousy town centre.
