07:2165431Isn't It terrible all those people who in good faith booked there hols only to find the airlne company went under.
Many getting to there holiday accommodation and having to pay the hotel bill.
And now people are fighting to get even a small amount of there dosh back.

10:1965444Not so Keith. The company was covered by ABTA and ATOL licenses which means the holidaymenkers will get ALL their money back.
The tough bit is having to pay for accommodation etc., again before they can get their refunds.
It's a shame we can always find money for wars, but not to help stranded citizens in need it seems. The UK Government should step in, pay the holiday outlets etc., and then get their money back from ABTA/ATOL. Too easy I suppose.

10:5865457One of the things I don't understand about the travel industry is, when someone pays a holiday company/agent for their holiday - the flight and accommodation, why doesn't the airline and hotel receive their money very shortly afterwards, from the agent ?
Money paid by the public for their holiday, doesn't go to pay the hotel or the airline - at least not for their holiday, but why not ?
Doesn't the whole travel industry need a shake-up ?

11:2065464i think the answer lies in the small margins that travel agents and tour operators operate under, they must try to increment this by squeezing some interest out the held money for as long as they can.

19:1765497I am all for small government Howard, and what I am proposing is helping citizens. What every Labour governemnt has done is increase its monitoring, recording and taxing of its people amd nothing much to help them in times of need.

08:1265537You are right Howard - they do work on very small margins.
I understand that someone who is really struck can get a loan through an embassy to get home Sid in some circumstances. It seems reasonable to me that people should in the first instance be called upon to pay. For the State to step in and help regardless as to whether people can afford to pay or not seems over the top, imagine the beaurocracy in trying to get the money back once refunds have been made.

08:3265540Barry, the refunds would come direct from ABTA & ATOL, not the individuals.

09:4465546still sounds a bit complicated the present system of getting a loan from the embassy seems more straightforward.

09:5265548It all sucks, though, doesn't it? And it is usually the ones who can less afford it, those who go on package hols etc. The rest of us who wouldn't be seen dead in Thompsons get off a bit lighter.............
