16:0436537Another plot attempt, perhaps the last chance Labour have of getting rid of Jonah Brown before the election 'proper'.
So far a lot of the Cabinet, most of the senior members, have kept quiet and not come out supporting Brown. His defenders are mainly pretty low grade. I suspect that Mandelson and Darling might be the ones to deal a killer blow or save him. Strange that Mandy has not yet spoken, he can kill a story better than anyone and it would be important to kill this quickly, curious that he has not done so. Apparently he is due to speak later today so we may find out then.

16:0936538Patricia ("who can I patronise now?") Hewitt and Geoff (buff-) Hoon are the culprits (or as they are affectionately known, the ****ing idiots) and are quite, quite stupid, whether you are red or blue. The blues are quite happy to keep GB in place - he is their best weapon against the reds! And the reds are happy - whoever else could they put in his place so near to an election (another unelected PM....) who would be able to make an impression? Damned idiots whichever way you look at it. And they are both about to retire, so what do they care...?!

16:3836542I totally agree with you Bern....
I just love it, the General Election campaign started two days ago and Labour are at war with each other....
More info here.

Speculation is there is more to come and that Hoon and hewitt would not have acted if there was not some heavyweight backing in the cabinet.
Will Brown hold out?
Will this force him to call the General Election early? That might be his way of silencing them.

17:4736557As almost an aside - the Conservative election machine is incredibly efficient and quick off the mark.
The 'snow plotters' used the Conservative campaign slogan in their letter (odd) and look at this poster that is already appearing around London....

17:5036558What amazes me is that they haven't come up with any alternatives for the leadership of the Labour Party, they have just said lets get rid of Brown.
A shot in the foot methinks. As Brown has had a resurgence in the polls recently.

17:5836559Not really, Marek, a minor and seasonal shift. They know that and see just where Brown is leading them.
Darling is still silent and Mandy has made a statement without a single good word for Brown... Harman is now rumoured to be behind the coup attempt. seeing she is the face of the Labour election campaign perhaps she sees getting rid of Brown as the only hope.
I suspect, unless the unexpected happens, that Brown will survive but severely wounded, more than ever a lame duck.

18:0336563errr the plot is not a rumour, the letter went out and the text is public, minor cabinet figures have been making statements of support while some key figures are staying strangely quiet for now.....
Gloat, of course I am gloating, this is great fun and proves how unelectable not just Brown is but the whole wretched lot.

18:0936565Wakey wakey Brian - read the statements being put out and look up the meaning of the word rumour in a dictionary.
The key figures to watch for are Straw, Harman, Darling, all of whom are being quiet.
Mandy it seems has pulled out of Newsnight tonight.

18:1536568Just after I made the above post Darling made a statement about getting on with governing, not exactly a warm endorsement for Brown.

18:2736572Don't call BarryW ...darling! You should be ashamed of yourself Brian. I am quite interested to see how this pans out.The political commentators expect Brown to emerge bruised but unbowed from this broadside.

19:5436585Marek, the best possible outcome for the Conservatives would be for Brown to survive. He will then be looking weaker and his Party divided with another rebellion unlikely.
This is a massive gift to us.

20:2336594Sadly true......!!!
The Tory machine, while speedy, is less than sharp given the thrice-changed-in-one-day policy this week which made Cameron look even more of fool with a bowel problem, and the deafening murmur of indecision emanating from the tory backbenches while they wait for someone to tell them what to think........
Well, it is an election campaign, gloves are bound to be ripped from hands.......

20:4236598this is looking like it will be a long and dull campaign.
there is no automatic challenger for the job of PM, seems to me that yesterday's deadwood are sniping.
usual thing in the major parties.
the blue poster suggests that they are a bit short of constructive ideas to woo the electorate with.

22:3836629Howard - 20 Health service policies were announced this week alone. That is just the first of the phased manifesto launch. No shortage of policies.
Agreed about deadwood sniping, this whiole Government is deadwood and the sooner we get an election the better. I believe that the odds of a March election have increased.
Bern - you old lefties do love to make a mountain out of a molehill. I agree that it is unusual for the normally assured DC to 'misspeak', something that was immediately corrected. No 'thrice changed in a day policy' at all. How does that compare with the regular slips of Browns tongue, at least DC did not try to claim he had saved the world!!!

23:2036640i must have missed those 20 health service policies barry.
might have been watching "celebrity mr and mrs" at the time, we all have our priorities.
were they policies or something that would happen eventually, in the fullness of time, once the economy was shipshape etc etc?
