Thanks for the honest statements Sheli
We at LRCF are always happy to work with you to make Carnival successful - you are always welcome to share our marquee at events in the run up to the big day
It is always the way with small town organisations and the politics of them - 2 carnival committees, 2 channel swimming associations, 2 chambers of commerce covering the area ,,,,,,

I'm sorry, I still don't really see the point of posting that statement. There is no statement from Dover Carnival Association stating that any of the events Dover Town Carnival attend have nothing to do with us, I find the perceived need to put themselves forward a little petty actually.
The comments regarding reputation, where does that spring from. Dover Carnival Association is not new (it's 130 years old). It's not doing anything detrimental to the town. As previously mentioned along with DTC it is winning awards in other towns, showing that the girls from Dover, regardless of which association they belong to are fabulous ambassadors for their town. They are not beauty queens they are carnival queens, where personality is valued more than looks.
Whilst I understand that there were questions regarding the carnival run by DCA in years gone by these questions are of the past for the last few years DCA has been an exemplary example of an association trying to do it's best for the town. The Dickens festival was a way for the association to put something on for the town on limited budget, this year DCA are doing a parade because a 130 year anniversary is something to celebrate.
No one in the DCA has ever said anything detrimental about the DTC and as also mentioned previously the girls get along very well as it should be. But I have often read posts on here and on other forums that are offensive to DCA and I would ask that if people do not feel they are able to support DCA can they at least appreciate that it is made up of well intentioned individuals who are just trying to maintain an age old tradition.
And yes it probably would be best if the two amalgamated and mediation was taken on by the town council... That meeting was a complete farce which I will not discuss here.
I just feel that DCA should be given the same consideration and respect that DTC receive as our girls are representing Dover too and with equally excellent results.

This is probably both a stupid question and a difficult question, but I genuinely don't know: why are there two carnival groups? Come to that why are there two channel swimmers groups and two chambers of commerce? Does the doubling up serve a purpose or hinder?

I'm afraid I can't tell you about the swimmer groups or the chamber of commerce but the reason there are two carnival groups is because a few years ago a number of people weren't happy with the way the carnival was run and so decided to set up a different group to run a better one. That group has since disbanded and Dover Town Carnival has been set up.
At no point though did DCA disband or give any intention of doing so. In hind sight rather than setting up a separate group those concerned individuals should probably have joined DCA and tried to change things from the inside, that would probably have made this situation moot but they didn't and today is the consequence of that.
I hope that helps to clear things up a little bit Bern.

Oh dear, I do hope this isn't going to be a repeat of the awful carnival thread we had a few years ago.

There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

unfortunately carnival always seems to be accompanied with controversy of some kind.
would be nice to see some photos of floats and participants on here for our members to enjoy, irrespective of which organisation they come from.
The occasions are always memorable, and I never really know which group it is I am watching but always watch them all. I genuinely don't grasp why there is division, hence the question. I think many others might be in the same position so it might be useful to ask those kinds of questions and the sensible answers that have been forthcoming. And if I might say so, divisions and arguments within some of the Dover groups have played a part in reducing the opportunities to move forward - that isn't a dig at anyone or a reference to any groups specifically, much less the Carnival groups who put on splendid shows - but it is worth noting that most of the groups probably have the same aims of improving and representing Dover so in all probability would prefer not to have divisions and arguments if they have a negative impact...........

To be perfectly honest with you Bern, is it really necessary to know which is which. Look at the photo's of the girls, they are beautiful (and that's not just the proud mummy talking) they are winning awards that reflect well on Dover and they are appreciated wherever they go, isn't that after all the most important thing.
I am with all those who have said on this thread that politicking is ridiculous and unnecessary in Carnival as far as I'm concerned it's all supposed to be about the fun and pageantry. But that's why I was so disappointed with the statement at the beginning of this thread.
Thank you Howard, yes Chris and I are very proud of our girls, they've been winning awards for Dover for the last three years and have had loads of fun doing it. I wouldn't have any part in any Carnival if my girls weren't enjoying it. I'm particularly glad that Honor got an award in Sandwich as this year is her last year.
