just heard on the news of 2 loan sharks being convicted, one given a suspended sentence!!!!!!!
the other got 5 years for intimidation, all the usual stuff, he charged over 2 thousand 4 hundred per cent interest.
that must be nearly double what our high street banks levy, why do people go to the loan sharks?
Desperation - unable to get money elsewhere because of poverty and debt. I have never needed a loan shark, but my heart goes out to those who do. They should be locked up for taking advantage of the vulnerable.

the bloke today got 5 years he lived the high life in the peak district, whilst his victims lived in sink estates.
the other one was just as bad and got off with a suspended sentence, no doubt he will be knocking on doors tomorrow again with a very big dog.
what wonderful judges we have!!!!

If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

A certain 'legit' company preys on people in these areas too, not just illegal operations.

Bern got it in one. DESPERATION.
The other words that come to mind to me are BASEBALL BAT and a piece of rope.
Spill the beans Barry. IF it's possible.

I couldn't believe it either Howard - getting a suspended sentence - he should have been suspended from the end of a rope.
These people, through desperation are forced into these scenarios, but a few years ago there was someone trying to set up a "Community" Bank here, but I can't remember now what they're called, but the maximum interest was 12%.
Having to pay stupid amounts like £83,000 back for a £500 loan, is so wrong; the judge should be thrown off the bench - how can that not warrant a prison sentence ?
I attended a Business Networking meeting last night at the Royal Hotel in Deal, ostensibly to promote Dover, through the Discover Dover leaflet. There was a guy there from a company in Dover who specialise in cancelling out "bad" contracts, one of which is loans.
These loan-sharking contracts could well be one of them that can be cancelled.
It's always the worst off, those who can least afford it, that get caught up in it.

Sadly it they have always been there, as has been said for some they are desperate to find a way out.
Debts pile up, and they need to be paid.
Of course we go bsack to earlier postings on prisons in general, cos if we are talking about heavier sentences we don't have the prison space, and if thats wot we want we need to build more prisons, but is prison the real answer?
I think we need to look agan at prison, and what alternatives could be put in place

maybe we should let out some prisoners to serve their sentence in the community.
non violent ones of course.
i think it was roger that mentioned the excellent work done by some offenders up at the corn mill.
more of that, i think.
save the jug for the real nasties.

The Community Pay-Back team do indeed do excellant work and of course it's all free labour, with most of the materials used, being donated.
Credit Unions is the word I was looking for on my earlier posting; they are official community banks and make affordable loans to people who are needy, maybe a bit above Banks, but only by about 2 or 3 percent. Certainly better than these scumbags - can't think of a more suitable word.

I suppose a "suspended sentence" means that the loan shark can repay his punishment to society by instalments and over a period of time...boomboomm
However Keith is right Prisons are bursting at the seams.Decisions have to be made about the type of crimbo we want to incarcerate..the paedo or the loan shark.
Maybe we should introduce weekend prisons...which enables the white collar crimbo with a job to work the week ,care for his wife and family ,meet the bills etc but at weekends he spends the time inside deprived of his leisure and social time. They operate this system overseas and its been very successful.

How do they measure its success Marek ?

roger
pimms no.1 is delicious if drunk straight from the freezer, not the fridge.
people pour it over ice, bit that just means the drink gets weaker and weaker very quickly on a hot summers day.
incidentally i would include loan sharks as serious criminals that should be locked up, no serving time in the comunity.
they would use violence to collect payments, otherwise people would just not pay them.

Hi Roger
They measure the success by the number of re-offenders, the reduction in the crime rate coupled with the cost of keeping people banged up for years on end. They found that by keeping offenders in work during the week and banged up at weekends therefore depriving them of their "quality time" was a greater deterrent and far more constructive than just yanking offenders and putting them in chokey for a couple of years.

I agree Howard - lock 'em up; the harm they do is immeasurable and the misery thy cause is immense.
Thanks Marek for that explanation. I'm all for depriving people of things they love when they've done wrong - whatever it is: freedom, money, their house, sex, anything that will punish them for their wrong-doing.
