Many say it was 'The Great' Caruso, but as with Mario Lanza, who died over 60 years ago, is one comparing singers or recording techniques?
Madam Butterfly live from the ROH with Mexican-American tenor Joshua Guerrero this Wednesday at the Astor. £18 a pop. Bargain.

Yes SIR The great Caruso is in the top five,I sung Tenor and baritone parts for years in choirs. and love it ,I would go and see a OPERA but do not have the funds for that, so it is records for me. If you can play the record called the Best OPERA SUNG BY Mario Lanza ,you will know where I am coming from.I did sing as a Egyptian soldier in the Opera Aida at the Marlowe Theatre some years ago that was a great night for me it was a very small part, but for me it was one of my best nights singing.

Top Tip. Steak night in 'spoons. If you go you can leave by the back door, cross Aldi car park and go down the passage at the side of the Retirement Centre and you come out opposite the Astor.

Vic. Nice to meet up with you and glad you enjoyed my company. (My carer says she thinks that most people, like her, find me a bit of a disapointment in the flesh).
Sorry you had to miss the end. It's the first time I've seen Butterfly since I had grandchildren so teared up a bit at the end (!).
Synopsis here :-
https://www.eno.org/discover-opera/operas/an-introduction-to-madam-butterfly/
Nice to talk to someone who enjoys music! St Matt Passion this Fri @ Barbican with daughter who whilst she has her mother's looks and my brains (thank God it was not the other way round - imagine being ugly AND thick!) also has her mother's ear for musical appreciation.
I'll try to start putting local concerts on 'Upcoming Events in Dover' thread (you missed a great theorbo last week
https://ssemk.org ) and perhaps we'll bump into each other again?
Back to ENO Butterfly on the Brennan LOUD as carer preparing open day at Captain's Garden. I haven't liked to break it to her that it's named after a different 'captain'.

Marvellous instrument.
I last saw a theorbo in action at QEH in 2003 with snooty Miller's staging of Monteverdi's L'Orfeo.

Tenor enjoyers might like to watch BBC4 tonight at 9pm for a 1983 Proms performance fronted by Richard Baker.
One half features Anthony Rolfe Johnson, not the greatest tenor, nor even the greatest English tenor, but a very good tenor indeed (he must be, because I attended a lunchtime performance at the RCM in the late 90s, and I prefer baritone).
Unfortunately he's singing in French (and Britten setting Rimbaud might not be your musical thing), but you can't have it all.
Neville Marriner (centenary tomorrow) conducts; also with Mendelssohn's 4th symphony (OK, some nice tunes).
