I believe this over rated ceremony takes place this evening.I wonder how many Town Councillors will stick to their principles and boycott the evening.Word has it that quite a few are,.Dont hold your breath though. As the Buffett is always splendid.I have attended in the past but never eat much food or drank the wine as the cost is borne by the ratepayers of Dover.I understand we have soup kitchens and food banks in this town?.

Couldn't agree more Mrs Nicholas ,Looking at the expense sheet for this archaic over rated party it costs more than Remembrance Sunday parade ,All this regalia claptrap needs putting in a museum and if we have to have a mayor /ress then just a smart suit or dress with a chain is more than adequate..Town council use taxpayers money more on themselves than the Town & ppl this should be stopped

I will be attending tonight's ceremony in support of my wife Karen who is making a speech to thank Dover Councillors for their substantial donation to the Riverside Centre, a donation that will enable the Centre to continue to provide hot meals each and every Saturday for the foreseeable future.
The Centre cannot provide transport of a Saturday therefore numbers attending were much reduced compared to weekdays. This makes hot meal provision on Saturdays financially draining on the centre, that is until the Town Council stepped in.
I should also point out that The Town Council is massively supportive of the elderly in Dover in many many ways and not only financially. They provide admin support, a central location for meetings and the councillors to a man/woman offer to those working at the Centre much needed encouragement for the work being done there.

I agree Ken and understand your attendance at this event.,however I do hope the food offered Is less in.quantity and money saved can go to Age Concern .food bank or soup kitchen. The rules for Mayor Making have changed so no last minute surprise .Over the past few years it has gone over the top.
With music and flowers .Im surprised that Karen is making a speech good as she will be however isn't a bit like the Town Council saying look at us.
surely a written thank you would suffice

Sue I cannot agree with you. A letter of thanks would not suffice, where in Dover could Karen address an audience of perhaps 300 and promote The Riverside to so many people? This is not the Town Council promoting themselves but a hardworking Dovorian jumping at the opportunity to promote a charity for the elderly in Dover.

I thought having 'your tongue torn out by the roots' was the correct phrase?

People may find this hard to believe but I have not been invited to the Mayor's shindig after the ceremony. Will have to cancel my standing order to his lodge.

Only invited guests can stick their snouts in the trough, more food than usual as they are concerned that the Mayor may be wasting away.

Sue
Age concern like all organisations should use opportunities open to them and like Ken says to be able to address an audience whatever the number can only be good for the organisation.
With regard to cllrs being gagged I'm unaware of this and certainly I will never be put in that position and continue to support the people that elected me and those living in the ward.

All guests were given the choice of a small glass of wine or orange juice and the food was basic fare, the same as Sue enjoyed so much before District Council meetings. In fact in retrospect it wasn't anywhere as exotic or expensive but it was enjoyable.

I hear on the grape vine the rules for Mayor Making have changed.ie Councillors cannot propose an alternative to the Mayor Elect.Thought you would have challenged that.
I support all the work Age Concen do but it is unusual to make an appeal on the night of Mayor Making.
I read the accounts surely Keith you challenged them?

Sorry to hear that ken the very least that His Holiness the Mayor and his invited guests should expect is a pig with an apple stuck in its gob.
I bet Keith cleared his plate before leaving.

I attended tonights mayor making and council meeting which I found to be very interesting and eye opening , I was also a little disappointed of the lack of some of our councillors that didnt attend although I did not expect some to be present due to a serious health issues , but others who obviously have a problem with our mayor who constantly whinge and whine on this forum made themselves look very disgruntled by not attending. Sour grapes maybe ?

Sue
No I didn't attend
And the accounts as so many different threads with regard to to the £350,000 have ben challenged over and over again by some Councillors.
I find it strange that Sue should pick up on the food, when as Chair of DDC and many other positions on DDC she resided over lavish food each council meeting, where I'm sure tea and biscuits would have done.
