In time for the early May Bank Holiday weekend DHB have managed to open the new Marina Pier for public access as well as vehicular and pedestrian traffic across the Wellington Navigation Channel & Lock Cut once again linking Marine Parade and the Esplanade with Union Street.
At present there is no seating along the length of the pier the shelter at the end being the only sitting area.
The new marina pontoon are mostly in place.
The Lock and Navigation Channel to Wellington Dock has yet to be completed but the Lock Gates have now been installed and we wait to learn of the installation of the operating equipment.

One of those views that we sadly lost when the Prince of Wales pier closed is resurrected once again. Good to be able to look back and see our seafront again from the Outer Harbour.

I took a walk down to the new pier yesterday. Positives: the curve of the black railings, the lamps with their anti-gull spikes, and the little drainage holes. Medium negative: no prohibition on cycling; the pier's too narrow for that and the ones dressed as if they've stepped out of the pages of a cycling magazine will use it as a race track. Big negative: I experienced no real sense of the sea: the arm coming out beyond has the pier in a half-nelson and, especially at the end, there's a feeling of enclosure rather than openness. Even the old Charles II walk gave you that thrill. But the marina pier's a poor relation to the Prince of Wales, whose lighthouse sits forlornly out of reach to the south west, wondering where all the life has gone.

Going by the photos it looks a lot better than I was expecting after seeing the original plans. I read elsewhere that there are plug in points for kiosks to sell snacks/ice cream etc hopefully there will be some seating for those less mobile.

We went to the new pier on Sunday. The pier seems much longer than it looks and looking towards the cafe on the old one seems around to be 2 thirds it's length. As mentioned previously the end view is masked by the new harbour arm and doesn't give the same feeling of the open sea as before.I hope they may consider a few more benches along the way as seating is very restricted at the end.The amount of cyclists there on Sunday was another issue as there was just far too many making the walk hazardous. We actually witnessed a crash with a cyclist and pedestrian, fortunately neither were hurt.Other than that they've done a great job and i,m sure it will be enjoyed by many.

Maybe DHB should add no cycling to the list shown in #9, I am surprised no one thought about the possible serious accident that could happen.

Surely the measure of a pier is whether the great and the good can be bothered to turn out for it...

WGS - there will be an official opening ceremony next year once all the early phases of the project are largely complete and the area around the Western docks isn't so much of a construction site.

Excellent news. More than enough time to hone my 'patronise a squaddie' skills, get a hat sorted and work on my limp.

Neil, May I suggest that either you allow cycling and install a cycle lane down the centre of the pier, or put up much more prominent prohibition signage? One small sign at the far right hand side of the entrance railings is not exactly going to catch the eye of a fast-moving cyclist. We were nearly hit today by a young woman on a bicycle cycling extremely fast along the pier. She passed us four times, twice in each direction, weaving dangerously among walkers.

I think a marked cycle lane would spoil the aesthetics. I would favour a ban on cycling on the pier only if cyclists can't be curteous to other users.

I tend to agree especially if/when mobile catering outlets appear along the sides of the pier. But who will enforce the ban? Nobody does at the moment. So how to control access? Perhaps a turnstile with a side gate for wheelchairs and mobility scooters etc? Or Port of Dover Police issuing fixed penalty notices to offenders perhaps? The offence of riding a bike on the pavement is punishable by an on-the-spot fine, a fixed penalty notice of £30. This is charged under Schedule 3 and Section 51 of the Road Traffic Offenders Act 1988.

Just build a narrow raised pavement, that's what most cyclists use anyway.

Hi Peter. The issues of cyclists and signage have both been raised this week.
