16:1839234But, Howard, they demand to be taken seriously, and even use up our legal system challenging privacy laws, claiming that it is our interest!!! S.C.U.M. probably sums it up nicely...........

18:1539244HOWARD
As BERN says, sadly many people will take what the nationals/locals say to be true, no matter whether its researched/factual or not.
How many times do you hear people at work quoting from a national/local as though it had to be true, even though proved after not to be.
So should what a footballer does in his private life effect being England captain, no it shouldn't.
But hey look at the times we are in,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

the newspapers i read never carry that sort of "story".
people have a choice in what they read, if they choose comics then expect them to contain nothing serious.

19:5339260Agreed Howard, but though I don`t buy any newspapers anyway, I saw that piece on the headlines and thought it would be interesting to get some views. It is serious though when the gutter press can try wrecking people`s lives, but I ask, do that amount of reader`s buy a paper for that dribble?
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.

21:4239277not sure about the french bob, but the germans, italians and our transatlantic cousins stoop as low if not lower.
do not forget that the original sunday sport started out with old stories nicked from the national enquirer.
who can forget the No.22 bus on the moon, the woman sexually assaulted by her fridge and the chap that cemented his toilet because aliens were entering his house through it.

11:1339413Haven't bought a newspaper for about 15 years. If I want the news I can find it online. The press in Nigeria is just as bad as that in the UK except the names are harder to pronounce!

14:1439425a decent newspaper can give a much more detailed report on an issue than anything on the internet.
the latter seems indulge in celebrity stuff and garish headlines.

17:5439448But Howard, the tabloids are read - I use the term loosely - by millions and they form peoples opinions when they are unable to form a coherent one of their own. Those people then vote, procreate, drive, God help us they even become nurses and bank clerks. You and I may choose to read somethi ng of substance, but what about those other poor blighters forced by their own lack of imagination and wit to read crap? Won't someone think of the vulnerable?!
PS - If I have offended anyone in the writing of this post I am sure there is a helpline somewhere to assist. Probably on GMTV website.

18:1939456so what is the answer?
we live in a market economy where people can pay their money on the daily sport or coin collectors monthly.
the tabloids rarely shape views, they merely reflect what they know the reader wants them to say.
the mail is the only tabloid that i ever look at, and i can predict what their viewpoints will be on the vast majority of subjects.
should someone want to form their own view on an issue they will take a serious newspaper that gives an honest, in depth appraisal of what is going on in the world.
anyway getting back to john terry for a minute.

22:4839483Howard, I think you will find The Sun has influenced voters actions for the last 30 years. Once Rupert starts his machine for Cameron any thought of a hung Parliament will be washed away by the Blue landslide.

23:2339492Like Sid I have not purchased or even read a National Newspaper for years, not since they destroyed a guy called Frank Bough a Television News and Sports presenter.
He had a very colorful private life which the newspapers made hey with and the guy was destroyed as a presenter. I would not condone his private life but once again that is what it was, his private life and it was then I made my mind up never to read the tripe National news papers print.
The fact is now we have the internet and very good television news you do not need to read a paper to keep up with what's going on in the world.

04:5139497I remember nodding and saying hello to Frank Bough on the Bridge of the St.Christopher as we sailed from Dover. Think he was doing a bunk to France after his naughty escapades and had probably been invited up to get away from the general public.

10:2339507I remember the Olympic games of 1968, when I was up all night, and Frank Bough was covering the games on grandstand. And I do remember years later all the flack about him in the media, though at that time, as now, It didn`t interest me.
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.

21:5039568i thought it was hilarious actually, he was promoting himself as the home loving family man, even doing holiday programmes with his missus.
then a sunday paper produced photos of him in a brothel dressed in womens underwear, snorting something highly illegal.
hypocricy deserves to be exposed.

I totaly disagree howard. I get far more detailed news on the internet from a much wider range of sources. As always it depends on where you look. If you look at the internet versions of the tabloids then you would be right but the on-line versions of The Times, The Telegraph and the Guardian, anong others, do provide news and articles in as great a depth as the paper versions.
I use a 'portal' that provides headlines and links to all the on-line news media. As I am interested mainly in the political stories I use
http://www.politicshome.com as that portal.
