The railway company I am working for have been given money to get people doing an NVQ,and I put my name forward about a 2 years ago. Then nothing for 18mths then someone came to my office and said can you come off the window for 30 mins so I can go thru the paper work, I couldn't because I was the only person in the office and people wanted serving.
So in 3 mins he told me there are the papers read them fill them in and he gave me the impression that it was a complete waste of time.20 years ago I was on one of the first NVQ trial courses and had to choose a task and I choose to show everyone how to put a disposal nappy on a baby, using a doll not my daughter who is now 22.
So my question is,is an NVQ really worth it,next week I will be observed by a lady to see if I can do my job,the job I have been doing for 35 years! Now lets presume I can't will I get the sack.No. If I can will it make me more qualified can I put the initials NVQ after my name NO. Will having an NVQ make me better at my job.The lady has never worked in aTicket Office and is it worth having a NVQ in selling tickets, actually it is called Customer Services.
I have actually agreed to do it only because one of my jobs on the Council is Consumer Affairs.....but is it really worth it?
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

they are totally worthless john.
most employers think that the initials mean "not very qualified".
a lot of companies, especially in catering and the care field, mix in the jobs with an nvq at the end.
makes them look like they are interested in raising the standards of their staff.
They form part of Government Targets. Nuff said. Having said that, some are interesting, and they are a viable means of increasing the chance of employment or promotion.

They're just recognition of a competency, how highly you value that competency is up to the individual and the relevance to the job they are doing. If I had a restaurant, an NVQ in Food Hygiene may not tell me how well they can do the job but it at least a certain recognised level of knowledge.
Yes, they are just a factor in the recruitment process, really, and evidence that employers will support continued development of their staff.

The company I work for in my day job doesn't count ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) as a valid qualification. Amazing considering it's a government job. What's the point in all the effort?!
I know a million ways to always pick the wrong thing to say

Back in the 80's after one of my redundancies, I went to the job centre. They weren't interested in my qualifications (quite good actually) as they were "old". They wanted to know what NVQ's I had. When I said I didn't have any they totally lost interest. I walked out.
I went on to become production manager of a large electronics firm. Not bad for someone with no NVQ's.

ps At that time the front line staff wore name badges, the managers to whom one complained were simply "The Manager", nameless individuals who prefered to remain anonymous.

My wife has a University Degree BSc but in order to progress through the care industry she had to obtain her NVQ's 2 & 3 in Adult Care. She will be doing her NVQ4 in Management starting September. She has also attended a very large number of KCC run courses in drug administration, dementia etc that are required if she is to progress. She is now a Deputy Manager and thinks our education is the best in the world. She is only surprised at how lazy the young girls are that she has encountered who don't want to further their education or work.Sickness absenteeism is at its highest on Saturday & Sunday mornings. I took her to a quiet room to explain why!!
So to answer the question NVQ's in her opinion are an excellent idea and something we should be proud of..just an outsiders view for what its worth.
