  Life is too short to keep moaning. The Olympics is here just enjoy and lets show what makes this country great. Lets not keep decending into a blame culture and into the deep depths of politics. You have a choice. If you are not interested then turn the tv off and do something else. Sorry if that offends but Ive said it. Next you wil be moaning its too hot.

  As a patriotic Englishman I feel proud that we shall be hosting the creme de la creme of competitors from every nation on earth in every sensible sport known to man. What a spectacle, both of individual and team commitment and of the supreme heights of athletic achievement; for those of a sporting nature it really is the greatest show on earth, especially for those who are fortunate and dedicated enough to have made it to their national team.
  
  But what shame we bring on ourselves by allowing commercial sponsors to make the Games all about themselves, rather than all about the competitors. This all follows from the infamous London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Act 2006 which it makes it an offence to display Olympic symbols unless you are a paying sponsor. This turns common sense on its head - normally the event pays people to promote it. In this Alice-in-Wonderland situation it's the other way round.
  
  Two fingers to the sponsors, and all hail to the athletes. The fact that many of the events bore me rigid is neither here nor there, I shall still cheer on our team.

  Just to push the Olympic boat out a tad further...I've locked at the top of the page for a short term, further news about the Olympics courtesy of DDC...ie the Big Screen OLYMPIC Event this friday in Market Sq. Strictly for those who havent had enough already. See seperate thread locked at top of page.

  #18 Chris. Sponsorship is part of marketing and that is an allowable business expense quite legitimately. Why on earth should they not take whatever tax breaks they can get. I have no time for the heavy handedness of the sponsorship deal but that is no reason to suggest they should not take the tax breaks. If they did not sponsor the games they might not have happened or, if so, then we taxpayers would be paying a whole lot more and in spite of my own boredom with the whole thing it is good for us to host them.

  Pick the bones outta that. I reckon many of the sponsors would be getting their tax relief elsewhere anyway, given that they are global organisations.
