We will see in due course what the electoral benefit is (in Totnes) when it comes to the election. Pundits and statisitians will pour over the figures to assess the impact. It will ultimately be their conclusions that will determine whether this has legs. Personally I think it has and will prove to have lasting benefits, regardless of the cost, it may be deemed more cost effective than the national election poster campaign for instance. Choices will have to be made for future elections on just what money is spent on.

So no, I think it is not a publicity stunt but an important experiment in the decentalising of power back to the electorate. It chimes fully with the Conservative theme of localism and that is a very powerful theme in the Conservative Party.

I can see that Labour will be very worried by this development in many ways and I am not thinking of the financing. If it is deemed worth it the finance will be found.
