I have long suspected that the annual trip to the vet for cats and dogs to have booster vaccinations is a more about a money spinner for the vet than the welfare of the animal after reading that there was no evidence to suggest that immunity is lowered after they receive their inital jabs and that, like humans, the immunisations actually last several years if not a lifetime. This seems a logical conclusion.
I haven't quite had the confidence to take this line with my dogs but after reading a new article yesterday which said there was new scientific evidence to suggest there is no need for annual vaccinations because of the retained immunity from the initial course it reminded me of my dilemma. I don't know what this new evidence is but I would love to get hold of it.

Funny that Claire when I had my previous dog,she started having epileptic fits soon after we went for a booster, these continued for several years and for no real reason,I was concerned that the boosters were not helping so I stopped them result dog stopped having fits.
Now these fits can just start and stop and I am not suggesting that they were the cause......but ....it makes you think...
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

We have a 17-year-old 'puppy' who has never had boosters. Only one op in 17 years and apart from the odd touch of arthritis, she still runs around like a two-year-old and gets up to mischief!

i was told by a vet that boosters are of no use after 3 years, the dogs have enough immunity by then.
good income for vets though.
We have always had our dogs "boosted", more out of a sense of duty really! But the comments on here are pause for thoguht when we get another dog - which we will eventually! The cat seems to trundle along without, for now.

Like Howard, I was told that after a certain age, boosters serve no purpose (except to swell the Vet's bank account). Our dog (who is 10) hasn't had boosters since the age of 4 and is quite well. Stupid, but well.
