Considering we live in an area of lowish income and are designated a (in need of) growth area, why do we get such high prices??

12:5213303Yes, curious isn't it? As we now shop at ASDA we have enjoyed cheaper petrol for some time. Another curiosity is that the Duke of York's filling station is often a penny cheaper than Tesco!

13:3513307ChrisK that's some very interesting information there, I always buy my petrol in either the Duke of York's filling station or Tesco's, I'd love to know why it is more expensive here in Dover and what if anything can be done about it.

13:3713308It all comes down to size, according to experts. The size of the company running the petrol station, the size of its customer base and the size of the competition.

13:3913309People coming through Dover are a captive audience as they probably need to fill up for the rest of their journey. Supply and demand.

14:0013314And why is diesel so much more when it needs less processing - is better for the environment and I have one!

14:2913317Sarah,
That doesn't sound correct, I spend a lot of time in faversham and whitstable and despite being smallish places they have far cheaper petrol.

14:3513319Bern,
Who actually buy's their petrol here? Not the truckers which leaves mostly us the residents and the people heading onto the ferries. Until recently most people would have purchased in France because of the price over here, so..

19:1913335David is on the ball. A captive travelling dispersed audience....perfect fodder for a bit of price-setting (avoided the word "fixing" - note to self, well done, no-one noticed....)

22:5913360i was chris, did not last long.
seriously though, when any company is out delivering goods, they like to work in a circle, with drop off points as close together as possible.
dover is a problem, a load may be three quarters discharged in canterbury, leaving the truck half an hour to get here earning no money, then it may have to go back as far as canters again before picking up any cargo, hence time with no money again.
in an urban environment, trucks are continually dropping off and picking up.

08:3113379Then why is petrol in Folkestone much cheaper than Dover, surly the same principle applies Howard.
Tesco Folkestone I think you will find is cheaper than Tesco Dover and there are two or three small petrol stations in Folkestone that are around 83p. The one on the right as you drive down to Folkestone Harbour certainly is about 83p and that is only a small station.

09:2313388From what I hear in Asda's case (Canterbury) is that the majority of petrol stations within a 3 mile radius have to bring their prices inline or they suffer. But as said beforehand why is it far more expensive in Dover? It does not make commercial sense or am I missing something?

13:5613404Chris -
It was just information I gleaned after reading a couple of articles. In all honesty I don't think anyone can really answer the question, and most petrol retailers charge pretty much what they like based on how much others near them are charging.

14:3813502Tesco have now gone up to 89.9, but they do give double points to clubcard holders which in effect means the price remains the same to card holders but not to others.
BTW I emailed them at the end of December saying that as it was Christmas they might reply to my March H&S issue. An auto email said that they were sorry no-one had contacted me and the store would do so.
They haven't.
'nuff said. Don't go there anymore, but much as I like ASDA, DTIZ isn't the right place for it.
