19:0430884I`m sure some members out there will know of this book. I`m interested as to what year it appeared, when it finished, and where it originated from. Did other towns have a similar directory? The one I have, covers 1937-38, all businesses, names and addresses, who lives where, and it belonged to my father. His father had a fancy goods shop at 16 Worthington street before the war, and his best mate was Dan Grilli, who had a confectioner`s shop there at 6 Worthington street, and was still going in the early 60s. Another bit of Dover history. Anyway, any info on above?

19:1630888I used to collect those flags of the world bubble gum in the early 60s Vic, there were 80 of them, but nobody could ever get one of Great Britain. I realised years later, it was probably so you kept buying the gum. Anyway, I was in Dan Grilli`s shop one day with my dad, and he kindly opened about 20 or 30 maybe, bubble gums to find one, but to no avail. He popped them back in the box with the rest when he`d finished.

19:1730889Yes there were Pike's and Kellys directories for all over the countries and they are a great source of research - I think they go back to the 1880s through to the 1960s
Been nice knowing you :)

19:3430895Thank you Paul. I don`t often see them up for sale, so I wonder how many are still in existence?

19:3830897Couldn`t do these books today. People are too busy moving about, and don`t get to know their neighbours. And businesses keep closing.

22:3367689Pike's Blue Books are very useful.
And talking about Grilli family, was the one in Worthington Street connected to the ice-cream family?

22:4367693Thank you Kath, for revitalising this thread. It didn`t get much comment first time round, but with new member`s such as yourself, we might get more interesting information on our town. Regarding the Grilli`s, I`m sure I heard mention on here or in a local book that they had a few thing`s going here. Have to come back on that one, though Paul Scotchie may have something?

23:1967703I vaguely remember from the 50s a Grillis ice cream parlour where the Peter St Surgery is now, and a toy shop on the other side of the road which became Shepherds the jewellers - heaven for kids!

08:4567724The toy shop Ray was Doyles, I used to spend a lot of time looking longingly in the window. I did buy a toy army vehicle in the once, I played with it for a couple of hours and then took it back and changed it for something else!
What is now the chemist next door was Dunfords the greengrocer.

16:1567772 With mention of Grilli`s above from Kath, this is another, never shown before, pre-war picture taken by my father on the Prince of Wales pier. Dan Grilli, (my dad`s best mate), who owned the shop round Worthington street is in the driving seat, while the other two gentlemen are unknown. Of greater interest to other`s maybe, is the motor car. Can someone identify it?

Do you have a larger copy of the photo?
It could be a flat radiator Morris Cowley or a Ford, or even a Lea-Francis. The panelling between the running boards and the body was not fitted by many makers. My feeling is for the Morris without a better look at the radiator/mascot.

09:4567923Ken, I`ll email you the photograph mate, as I`m sure you`ll view it better. I have two other photo`s from the same time, and I`ll check how much of that car is showing. HOWARD, I`m sure Elliot Ness will be along shortly searching the boot for drugs and illicit alchohol.
