I see that in the dreadful Dubris column in this week's Dover Express, they are having a go at BBC South East for mis-spelling Charlie Elphicke's name (they missed the last "e" off it).
And that's in the same paper that puts an apostrophe in Archer's (for Archers Court) on page 8 and refers to district council leader Cllr Paul Watkings (yes, with a "g") on page 12.
Perhaps they might be better advised to put their own house in order first.

Pot Black?
Oh yes, the good old BBC snooker show, "For those watching in black & white, the red is to the left of the green."
Someone once wrote that he thought I was a cretin, hah! I said, I've never been to the Mediterranean, and anyway the word should begin with a capital letter.
...That told him!!

And I thought we might possibly have a politics free subject.
Back to Jim's topic, I agree but not exactly surprising from the so called 'local' rag.

Thanks Jan - I had wondered where this was going, certainly nothing to do with what I originally posted. No wonder some people give up posting!!

Nobody should throw stones about the use of English on this forum. Many schoolboy howlers go unnoticed and unpunished on a daily basis, and while it's a shame that our language gets mangled, as long as the meaning gets across, that's OK with me. On the other hand, newspaper journalists and BBC editors are supposed to be professional wordsmiths so they are fair game. However, Jim, I'm sure Simon Finlay will be watching your every post from now on......

The express has a cheek
they publish many articles of errors
even pictures of the wrong place they are reporting upon
Hardly the best people to judge

are we not being a bit unfair on the chaps at the express?
they have a new, very young team and do not have the experienced kathy to oversee like others have.
we all made horrendous errors when young, the only real way to learn.

Howard;
The expresse gives the impression its a 'community paper'
yet, like this article are quite the opposite.
I'm aware they attacked a volunteer of a community association on similar grounds.(hardly supportive of volunteers or the community)
The heading though says it all

In years now gone, there was ALWAYS a proof-reader who laboriously went through EVERYTHING before it was finally put to bed. No paper was printed without it.
I am married to one of them! It becomes a life-time habit correcting what other people have written !!

always amazes me that a small town like dover can support 2 local papers meaning both have to set out their own style to survive.
miraculously both do with the added problem of neither having an office in dover.
the express is much more tabloid in style reflecting the age of the staff whilst the mercury is more staid with much more community focus. a lot to do with graham's wealth of experience culminating in him reaching his 120 years unbroken service award recently.

mercury is a better paper
but that's not for this post
Brian, you appear to have missed the point(or maybe not)
the express has a go at a person for spelling yet im aware as many others are of poor spelling and even wrong pictures by the express, that's the heading brian
