10:2228203The courageous and inspiring quadaplegic woman who has sailed around the UK is arriving in Dover on Tuesday 1st Sept - are we doing anything to welcome her?

14:0528222How about our "well off new buildings galore" council throw her a reception at the Royal Yacht Club and invite some of the worlds media along.
Nigel MinesapintCollor and Roger WheresthebuffetFrayne can pose for photos. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor should both be present in suitable itsy witsy yellow weehie polka dot bikinis. A lot more fun than the poor girl not being met at all.
C,mon Dover do summat...

15:0228225Bern as far as I can tell there is no welcome planned. Once again I seem to be answering unofficially for officialdom but neither the Mayor or the Deputy Mayor have it on their list for the simple reason I would guess is that they know nothing about it.
Ive seen over the years various things happen on the seafront re channel crossings and so on and usually the newspapers are tipped off and they usually will get there if there is something newsworthy, and even occasionally the TV crews. They might be the only people knowing about this as nobody tips off lowly websites!...and the news media like to keep it to themselves as they might be on a scoop.
One of the bigggest non media/public representative disasters ever was when a huge navy vessel came into the harbour and lots of veterans with amputations and so on came ashore on landing craft. Very spectacular but they were met by nobody at all as I remember...only a hundred or so people were on the beach to see them and the people who live on the seafront saw it all. I got pictures as did our favourite roving guy Phil Eyden who happened to be there. But that was a bit of a Dover PR bummer as the event was so huge.
But usually its just the media who get to these things judging by past experiences.....but you never know, somebody somewhere might have something planned.

15:3828230There was actually a very sinister reason behind the beach landing which was why it was all kept hushed up.
If you open the photos up one by one on the link below all will become clear.

16:2528231Ah jeez thanks for that Ed..excellent everyone should take a look.
A further piece of info re the quadreplegic sailor Hilary Lister. Ive just seen an item on the East Kent Mercury website by our good egg Graham Tutthill which lets us know she is coming and says that "celebrations are planned at the port to mark her arrival". I wasnt aware of this beforehand but you know how it is...once you look you notice things you never noticed.

16:2828232However, I have seen nothing around Dover to indicate anyone here knows or has anything planned. Are we supposed to be clairvoyant? (Not a pop at PaulB!! More an exasperated pop at DDC again.)

08:5728296And where is it advertised? Are we invited? Is Dover doing anything? Will Dover be celebrating this achievement coming to our own shores?

09:1128298Nowhere,no,no and no. Hope that helps Bern but it would appear that DDC would rather spend OUR money on a new office ,where you can't pay your bills and won't be able to go to if your a commuter or shift worker, than celebrating this girls fantastic achievement. Priorities, they don't know the meaning of the word... "lets make hay while the sun shines" should be, these free loading self gratifying publicity seeking 'we know what's best for Dover' non action procrastenating Councillors 'motto

11:1028405My stepdaughter Stevie attended at the reception in the Western Docks, on her first outing as a volunteer with St.Johns Ambulance. Hilary had arrived rather unexpectedly the previous night. A big marquee had been erected and Stevie turned up at 0700 in preparation whereupon she and her colleague helped put all the chairs out! All the booted and suited attendees arrived about 0830, including Gwyn, the family and the media. The reception lasted from about 0900 to 1200 with a lavish buffet.
Dover Mercury video below, Hilary comes across as articulate and personable and has certainly raised awareness as to what somebody so severely disabled can accomplish. A landmark achievement - and it started and ended in Dover!
