On saturday night I needed a quality establishment for a nice occasion, so a bit of mental headscratching was needed, as in..where to go!? There are lots of okay places in inner Dover but not many with that special touch, so after a bit of research two choices sprang to mind.
Walletts Court first, so I called up but alas alas the place was full, or more accurately had just one table left, but at a time that didnt suit. So clearly the restaurant is doing very well.
Next choice was trickier, but in the end I called that little known gem..The Jackdaw in Denton. I managed to get the last table available. I was calling about 11.30am.
Clearly then these quality places are NOT struggling and that's great news as we all need them to survive. We need them to be there for us when that special occasion crops up.
But a little about The Jackdaw. This restaurant has the most unbelievable menu seen in these parts. It is.. yes, truly unbelievable and truly unexpected...not only has it a wide variety of traditional stuff but it has exotica. Some of their amazing dishes are...
Jambalayas of multiple variety.
Buffalo Steak
Peppered Kangaroo
Curried Goat
and much more
...you wont get any of that in Wetherspoons!!
Of course as prices go its fairly expensive I suppose, with main dishes from £12 to £20 and a Sancerre Wine enjoyed at £22.50, and that was one of the cheaper ones. Other courses are correspondingly not low cost either. But...The restaurant was full.
Nice then to see these quality establishments survive, not only surviving but doing well too.

I remember using The Jackdaw in the distant past, if I remember it was used for a few scenes in the film 'The Battle of Britain' where Peter Finch & Susan Hampshire would meet over a glass of beer. A nice pub and restaurant on a sunny afternoon

I am not on about promoting things like forum party or mayors do.
We have some fine restaurants in Dover, and we should use them

Barry W-S. yes indeed it was used for the Battle of britain film but you have the wrong stars. Suzannah York was the actress, the actor escapes me for the moment, Christopher ?????
I will post when it comes back to me.

Ah yes BarryW you are right. Christopher Plummer and Susannah York were the stars who visited this location or so rumour has it anyway. Whether they filmed there or not I dont know, but will watch out for it the next time the movie is on. We will have to send Barry W-S for further indoctrination!lol Fascinating ancient buildings in Denton didnt realise.

Oh dear! I obviously wasn't thinking when I responded to Barry's comment. It was the sudden thought of those eyes. There was another actress with lovely eyes but I can't remember her name at the moment.
La Scala was recomended to me a while ago but when I went there the minestone soup was off the menu!!! Oddly enough the best minestrone I ever had was in a Turkish cafe in Villiers Street by Charing Cross. I went there with my mate Dave Chaplin, anyone remember him? I bet Keef does.

Yes John. In his younger days he was a referee for Sunday football. Was also treasurer for GHBS for a time. I helped him move from Dover to Southall. He didn't turn up for work at the "Kent Connection" one day. The police went round and discovered that he had died during a fit.
He emptied a train at London Bridge one day during fit. It was packed as usual and during the fit he ended up punching some of the commuters. He was a big bloke and it took two ambulance men and a porter to get him off the train.
A nice bloke.

Oops! I stand corrected, I got my counties mixed up (Hampshire & Yorks) lol! Thankyou BarryW for for putting me right, I am now looking forward to being indoctrinated. Ooh, Young Man!

I don't get out much.......but I haven't noticed any sparkling restaurants in Dover either. The last time I ate in out a Dover restaurant that had been recommended by locals and by local press I was deeply disappointed - I love my food (a quick glance ay my embonpoint will confirm that!!!) and expect quality produce, coooked and presented and served well - no more and no less. I have yet to experience it in Dover - but, as I say, I don't get out much!!!!!

Bern although you dont get out much you are absolutely right...I get out a lot and have tried them all (or at least the ones that appeal ) on every occasion from Valentines Day to New Years Eve, and I can confirm the mediocrity. You cant exactly go out on the town in Dover....and when you try to the places are very often empty....which is a killjoy in itself.
Some places however you can have a good time, but very often where the food is good the ambience is awful and vice versa.
Example: A gathering of 30 of us or so , many forumites, went out to an inner town place on New Years Eve. Yes we had a laugh
good music
good wine
good company
shambolic food.....dont remind me! Im still waiting on dessert!
there are pictures still somewhere on this website.
However we are not prisoners here in Dover and we can go further afield. Many have grasped this fact already with regards to shopping, cinemas, bowling and so on... but maybe there will be better days ahead.
John have heard about The Churchill new menu..must try that.
