Attributed to Abraham Lincoln but later disclaimed.
You cannot bring prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot help small men by tearing down big men.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
You cannot help the poor man by destroying the rich.
You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income.
You cannot further brotherhood of men by inciting class hatred.
You cannot establish security on borrowed money.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away man's initiative and independence.
You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves

There are always difficulties arising that tempt you to believe your critics are right.'

fine words bob. the same chap came to fame winning the mens singles at wimbledon back in the sixties, i knew he would come good eventually.
Howard, I think you've got Ralph confused with Roy.
Ralph was of course the better tennis player but banned from the professional circuit because of his insistence on playing in a red and white striped sweatshirt and a bobble hat

"As we move from an economy of affluence to an economy of scarcity, we must be careful that the people who make $5,000 a year are not pitted against those who make $25,000 a year by those who make $900,000."
Barbara Mikulski (1936 - ____) US politician
and as Bobs mate 'the great Waldo Emerson' once said
"A creative economy is the fuel of magnificence"
Marek
I think therefore I am (not a Tory supporter)
We all seem to be forgetting this Emerson chap also formed a rock group with his chums Lake and Palmer, who of course are both famous in their own right. One for shopping centres (Lake Side) and the other, biscuits (Huntley and Palmers Rich Tea). Sadly Palmers partner in business, Huntly, committed an atrocious crime and is now spending the rest of his miserable life behind bars.
Marek, rule No1: NEVER listen to female politicians from America.

My favourite Lincoln quote:
"You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time."
Abraham Lincoln, (attributed)
16th president of US (1809 - 1865)
13 years of Blair lies and Brown ineptitude show this to be true.......
True friends stab you in the front.
But they only fooled their supporters Andy.
